PDF Editor FAQ

Do people even go on dates anymore?

Yes, often. It's necessary to get where you want to go.I liken it to college applications, which were also a monumental pain in the ass.You are filling out the application. (Asking for a date)You are being graded on:Your test scores. (Looks)Grades. (Personality)Interview/Essay. (Date performance)Every person is like a different school that uniquely weighs these criteria.Getting rejected sucks. But those acceptance letters sure feel good. :)

My daughter is gifted and the school wants her to skip 2 grades in high school. I am worried about her being with students so much older than her. What would be best for her?

So, what’s the endgame here? She skips two grades, graduates high school at 16 rather than 18 years old, (roughly) and then she goes to college? Do you think she will be socially and emotionally ready to go off to a challenging, high-level university when she’s 16 or 17 years old? Maybe she will be. There are kids who go to college much earlier.Or maybe she won’t be ready to leave home and go to Princeton, so maybe she’ll work for two years to earn money for college, and she can keep in touch with her friends who are going to homecoming and prom. Yeah, that sounds fun, huh?But here’s the thing. She doesn’t have to skip two grades, and she doesn’t have to be bored in classes that are too low level for her. If the school thinks she’s that gifted, they can work with her so she can take the classes that challenge her, but take fewer classes each semester to stretch her two years into four. Or three, if that sounds more sensible. With the school’s help, she can arrange her schedule so she’s not actually in school full time. She can start school late or go home early, or maybe she’ll just go three days a week, depending on the class schedule. When she’s not in high school classes, she can take classes at a local or online college and get credits that will transfer when she goes to the university. She’ll still be with her friends through high school, she can date guys her own age, and she can still challenge herself academically. Then, when she gets to college, she’ll have some of her classes completed.Or, she can stay in high school, skip the basic classes they think she doesn’t need, and she can take extra classes in subjects that interest her. Why choose between French and Spanish when she can have both? Wouldn’t that look good on a college application? Instead of 2 years of a foreign language after graduating early, she would have 4 years of two different languages.Don’t choose between chemistry and biology - take both. Take English literature and modern poetry and creative writing. Or she can fill in with some classes that are fun, like drama, music, dance, or art.Or she can spend time volunteering, tutoring, or doing other things that challenge her and that will look good on her college applications.Really, though, I think you and she need to have some serious discussions about both the academic and social issues, look at all of the options, and then let her mull it over and decide what’s best for her. If she’s smart enough to skip two years of high school, she’s smart enough to know what she wants.
