Why are California sales tax so insanely high? I bought something on Amazon and paid $30 sales tax.

Outrageous! So, you purchased something — from Amazon — that cost $413.80.And the state of California charged you an additional sales tax of $30.00.That is a whopping 7.25 percent. And you are outraged.Even worse (gasp) — it would have been $36.17 sales tax - if you lived in my own state. Outrageous, right? My state charges 8.74 percent.Even worse (gasp) — it would have been $36.91, if you lived in Oklahoma. Outrageous, right? Oklahoma’s sales tax is 8.92 percent.Even worse (gasp) — it would have been $37.92, if you lived in Alabama. Outrageous, right? Alabama’s state sales tax is 9.14 percent. In fact, there are nine states that have higher state sales taxes than California. Nine states. California is number ten. And, several of those states have city sales taxes or town sales taxes or county sales taxes that charge an additional sales tax — on top of the state tax. Outrageous, right? So do many of the states with lower sales taxes. Outrageous, right? Insane, right? Now, you could move to any of those states that have lower sales taxes — but then you would notice that they also have higher state income taxes, and higher real estate taxes — to make up the difference.Oops... Sorry — I lost my place… why are you outraged, again? And, what is it that is so “insane”?—P.S. — Do you still have your roads, there? Your interstates? Do you still have public schools? Fire Departments? Police Departments? Water services? Gas services? Sewer lines? Electrical lines? Park districts? Just checking…

Is it better to live in Kansas City, Missouri or Kansas City, Kansas?

In our case, it was KCMO hands down.We recently sold our home in Oklahoma and moved to the KC area. Although we did look at a few places on the KS side, we never seriously considered buying in KCK or the close-in suburbs (Olathe, Leawood, Overland Park, etc). Why were we singly focused on the MO side of the “great divide?” One word: taxes! A knock-on effect of the “Brownback Experiment” in KS was significant increases in property taxes at the local level. While income taxes did drop, for most working stiffs the drop wasn't enough to offset the increase in property taxes. The other tax consideration for us is the fact that virtually none of our income will be taxed in MO but all of it would be taxed in KS. MO doesn't tax military retirement pensions or MO state pensions. And since none of these will be taxed, neither will our Social Security benefits. All of these are taxed in KS. The 1% KCMO income tax only applies to wages and self-employment profit so doesn't affect us. Between property taxes and income taxes, we're saving around $8,000 per year by living in MO.Most of the other factors such as availability of healthcare, entertainment, shopping, etc as well as safety and infrastructure were a wash. We settled on a place north of the river near Zona Rosa and everything that we need is within a short walk or a shorter drive.2020 Update:I would recommend that you live in the same state as you work. Multi-state tax returns are a mess. It's even messier if you live in KS and work in KCMO as you are still subject to the KCMO wage tax and you don't get a credit on your KS tax return for that tax. You still get the credit for the MO state tax, just not the city wage tax.
