There are subtle details that are easy to miss. The US pays dairy farmers $20 billion in direct subsidies. How that can be in a society that worships free enterprise is explained by the fact that it is really politicians buying votes. The result is cheap product.Canada does not use tax dollars but rather a system to control production called Marketing Boards. To produce milk a farm must have a Milk License and they are worth a fortune. Let's say that the Milk Marketing Board expects consumption for the year to be 100,000 quintals. Farmers are given individual quotas totaling 90% or 90,000 quintals. Imports can make up the shortfall to 100,000 quintals and they are tax exempt. If actual consumption is 98,000 quintals then Safeway or whatever pays the Milk Marketing Board for most of it and the balance is bought from outside, mostly the US, at an average rate historically of 8% of the Canadian market. If the actual consumption is 102,000 quintals then the last 2,000 quintals are taxed at a rate of 270%. This is mainly a disincentive to Safeway and friends to avoid trying to flood the market with cheap imports. The actual details are more complex, such as the fact that with our winters milk production is not steady. We do not use chemicals to extend production in cows that should not be milked.For the Great Pumpkin to say simply that Canada charges 300% on dairy, that Canada is thus unfair, and to leave out the fact that US producers are subsidized is not really a lie but is simply using the truth with abandon like a politician. And who said that his lack of political experience would be a problem? He already had the lying part down pat.

My 3 year old son needs to drink half a cup of cow’s milk every morning, and another every night to make sure that his anaphylactic allergy to cow’s milk doesn’t return. If he skips even one dose, there’s a chance that he could have an allergic reaction to the next one - though this should become less important as his body adjusts more fully. We hope that by the time he starts Kindergarten, he will no longer need to drink milk twice a day in order to maintain this protection.We discovered his allergy to cow’s milk when he was a tiny baby, only 2.5 months old. As he grew into toddlerhood, his allergy got more severe. Before he turned two he had had multiple anaphylactic reactions to tiny, minute exposures, and been to the emergency room twice.My cousin grew up with an anaphylactic allergy to milk, so I knew how challenging it is to live with a severe milk allergy. Because milk is so hard to avoid in our society, and because his was such a severe case, I didn’t want to follow the standard advice of “avoid and hope to outgrow”. Instead we signed him up to begin oral immunotherapy (OIT) with a licensed allergist - to treat his allergy, so that he would be able to eat unlimited milk products like a normal kid.The treatment worked. My son is now 3, and able to eat cake, frosting, pizza, cheese, yogurt, and drink regular cow’s milk. But I have to make sure that he drinks his 120ml of cow’s milk every single morning, and again every single night to maintain this protection.Here’s my son post treatment, eating regular cheese pizza and cake at a birthday party, just like a normal kid.
