You didn’t mention anything in your question about the dollar losing value, so I’m answering this question under the assumption that the only thing that’s changed is the dollar is now the smallest unit of currency. That means that cents are eliminated, with all non-dollar coins losing their legal tender status.If that happened, then using fractions/decimals of a dollar wouldn’t be used any more in cash transactions. However, that presumably wouldn’t prevent banks from being able to do transactions of less than $1. And a lot of charges include a fraction of a dollar (ex: a purchase for $2.49), particularly when state sales tax is added. So merchants would would have a choice to make: round the price to the nearest dollar, or stop accepting cash. Rounding the purchase would hurt the merchant or the customer. So many merchants would simply stop accepting cash.This would create a lot of problems. Most Americans don’t realize that about 7 or 8 percent of people in the United States don’t have a bank account, with the South having the most unbanked (Mississippi reportedly has a 16 percent unbanked rate).
