The Toledo or Ohio-Michigan war. No not the famed annual football rivalry -- that sometimes results in actual physical injury. This was a legitimate war. In 1835-36, Michigan was petitioning for statehood, but as part of their petition they insisted on claiming a thin, disputed strip of land along the border with Ohio that included the port of Toledo on Lake Erie. In retaliation, the State of Ohio blocked Michigan's entry into the Union until they laid aside their claims on Toledo. "Nuts" came the reply from Michigan's 24 year old "boy governor," and it was on! The war between the states 25 years before the War between the States. Both sides dispatched militias that took up positions on opposite banks of the Maumee River where they subjected each other to a campaign of ferocious taunting worthy of Monty Python. Finally, the taunting became unbearable and it came to fire! Fortunately, everybody missed, and nobody was injured. President Andrew Jackson eventually strong-armed a compromise in which Michigan gave up its claims to Toledo in return for statehood and two-thirds of the Upper Peninsula. Peace returned to the land.

Jim Harbaugh should be the #1 target. Will obviously have to cleanup some amount of verbal sparring over academics, but he is a "Michigan Man". If he can win at Stanford with the tougher than Michigan entry qualifications, he should be able to put Michigan back on the winning track. Even at Stanford and in the pass-happy Pac-10, Harbaugh plays tough-nosed football like Michigan people expect. He is a natural fit to come home and bring the history, standards, expectations, and traditions back to Michigan.Still not sure why no Division I school has gone after Larry Kehres, coach at Mount Union. He knows how to win, but maybe he is just happy where he lives and comfortable being a big fish in the small pond. With a career record of 289–22–3, some school should be throwing money at him trying to change his mind though.
