In the main 2016 my rank was 29k from 172/360 marks in mains and 89.6% in CBSEThat year my advance rank was 10367Next year(2017) I got 8340 in mains with 201/360 marks and 1885 rank with 246/372 marks in JEE advanced 2017 although I messed a bit in paper 1 (which being the easier one,I only got 116 marks in it) or else I would have got a rank near 500.The same phenomenon happened to me from ages - when I used to give my FIITJEE AITS and phase test, I used to get 2–5 times better rank in advance than mains.The thing was I used to stress a lot on concepts, exploring the concepts from many directions and as a result I failed to solve even 30% of even FIITJEE package,let alone other books and materials and did not do much practiceBut I did practice in the one month between mains and advanced and it did help in lessening my biggest flaw - silly mistakes

It is good to dream big, but you should be realistic also.I am not saying it is impossible but then everything comes under the domain of possibility.Is it possible that you will get AIR 1 next year ?Yes.Is it possible that you will not get selected next year?Yes.So, which possibility has higher probability?That will depend on your hard work. The harder you will work, the closer you will get to your goal.Now coming to your question, can you do it or not, that I don’t know. But, I haven’t seen anyone getting into top 100 with just 1 year of preparation.You have stated that you have got 28/360 in Mains, which is quite poor.What should you do?First of all you should join a coaching center because you have only 1 year and you need a proper guidance.Secondly break your goals into different levels and once one level gets completed, go to next level.Level 1 : Clear JEE MainsStart studying from today and give your all, work super hard.Join a Test series for JEE Mains.Cover the syllabus from NCERT.Solve past year’s papers.Review your test papers, analyze your mistakes.And don’t stop until you clear your JEE Mains Cutoff(worst case scenario, assume it to be 120).Once you clear the cutoff of JEE Mains, it is time to update your level.Level 2: Above 160 in JEE Mains.Keep giving your JEE advanced tests also, and see how you perform, but your primary focus should be to clear the 160 mark boundary in your Mains Paper.Practice as many questions as you can, solve HC Verma for physics, NCERT for chemistry, coaching material for Maths.Once you clear this mark , you have booked a seat in NIT.(I have set 160 marks but it can vary depending on the rank in Mains for which you aspire.)Now, update the level.Goal 3: Get in the JEE Advanced Ranklist.Again, there is no special recipe. Work hard, solve all the materials which your coaching institute gives.Practice as many papers as you can under time limit.Study hard.This won’t be much difficult since you are already scoring about 160–170 in mains.Update your level Further.Level 4: secure 40% marks in Advanced.Study.Practice.Study.Practice.Repeat.You will reach there.After this keep updating your level by increasing 10% in your Advanced marks.I can’t guide you into getting a rank in top 100 because I got AIR 2401.But once you reach 80%, you will most probably enter into top 100.Now the good thing about this method of preparation is that even if you are not able to reach 80%, you still have a lot in your plate.Say you reach:upto 50%, - under AIR 3000 in Advancedupto 40% - under AIR 5000 in AdvancedEntered Advanced Ranklist - chance of getting into newer IIT’s.Got 160 above in Mains - A seat in NIT.I think this method will suit you better and you will be motivated during your whole journey. But if you will directly aim to score 280/360 in Advanced with 28/360 in mains, it is quite close to impossible and it will demotivate you further.Rest is upon you. Work Hard and Best of Luck.

I have appeared in JEE mains twice. First in 2015 when I got a score of 235 and then in 2016 when I scored 296. I feel that I am in a good position to write about what to do in this kind of situation.I believe that a decent score is always achievable even if you are in this state.Let’s see how.Chemistry - I can guarantee on this fact that one who has studied NCERT of class 11th and 12th properly and can solve problems with decent enough speed can any day score 100 or more than that in this section in Mains. Most problems are very trivial and don’t require any advanced concepts to be solved. The only thing you need to is to have formulas on your tips, apply them correctly without any silly mistake and bubble the right spot on OMR. That’s it..4 points.Physics - On an average, I believe that physics is always a confusing section in Mains exam. You will have questions which can not be solved without prior conceptual knowledge and proper practice. But at the same time, there are questions which hardly need anything to be done on paper and you just need to analyse properly to solve. If you have good analysis skills and you are well versed with theory in NCERT, you can surely crack it with decent score. I believe a score of 50–60 is very achievable considering that this much paper is not that tough and limited knowledge followed by good amount of practice and speed can help a lot. Added to this, you can add your score here if you are good in some rarely touched chapters such as semiconductors. They are always a source of bonus marks.Solving some problems from each chapter to memorize theory and formulas will surely help in this section.Maths - If there is one section that is the actual decider in Mains exam, its this. Well, let’s face it. Not all of us are good in mathematics. Only those who have put in the hours before can have a chance here. Added to this , there are a lot of problems in this section that are not generally included in CBSE syllabus. To ace this section, you will have to solve hell lot of problems with a lot of variety. One also has to keep in mind that maths is generally the most time consuming section in the paper. A balanced approach can only get you through this one otherwise this can even mess your exams too.I believe the best last minute tips that one can provide now are these :Try to solve at least last 15 year problems. Sometimes mains have repeated questions.Be very well versed with theory mentioned in Inorganic part. Trust me, if you are good in this, you are already at an advantage.Memorize each and every reaction in organic chemistry anyhow. Some questions will be like direct see and mark on OMR.Try to solve all the previous year papers with full honesty and in time. This will help you in the speed and accuracy part which is one of the most crucial thing in Mains.If you have some time left, solve some mock papers to improve your conceptual understanding and speed.The biggest tool in your arsenal is to solve problems with accuracy and not solving more number of problems in a hurry by making “n” number of mistakes.Hope this helps now. :)
