The MV Sewol is the largest ship raised in a single piece from underneath the waves that was not intentionally sunk. She was a Korean ship which capsized in 2014 to the loss of 304 lives of the 476 souls aboard. The story is one of regulatory failure, as well as incompetence, negligence and criminal cowardice on the part of her captain and crew. The SMS Hindenburg was the largest by length and tonnage.At the end of WWI, 21st June 1919, the Germans scuttled their High Seas Fleet interned at Scapa Flow. 74 vessels were sunk, and 9 unarmed German Sailors were shop by the British while attempting to scuttle their vessels. These were the last casualties of the war.Salvage operations began in 1919, and by 1922 efforts were proceeding in earnest, headed by Ernest Cox. Salvaging German Fleet at Scapa FlowCox had divers board the sunken ships, patch the holes. He then pumped the ships full of air. Many refloated upside down. The Hindenburg was one of the more difficult ships to recover and was finally refloated in July 1930. She, along with the rest of the recovered fleet was scrapped.The recovery efforts at Scapa flow are the largest ever. The Germans scuttled 52 of their 74 ships, including 15 of their 16 capital ships. 48 were salvaged.
