How does Iowa State University compare with the University of Iowa?

I graduated from the U of I College of Engineering in 2007 so most of what I will say about academics will be based on my experience as an engineering student. My father attended the College of Engineering at Iowa State University. Oddly enough, after visiting U of I as a senior in high school with me, he told me that he liked what he saw at Iowa and that if it was up to him, he would choose Iowa over Iowa State. His logic was that Iowa State has a well-known Engineering program and therefore gets a lot of students to come. Most of the classes are very large in size and are designed to 'weed out' the under-performing students. Whereas at Iowa, the Engineering program is small and not well-known. Because of this, there is more of an emphasis to retain the engineering students and the smaller class sizes helps with this.A lot of the engineering classes at Iowa are geared more towards theoretical applications because the faculty tries to get a lot of engineers to go to graduate school at Iowa as well. (I did not attend grad school so I can't comment on that.)Having visited Ames many times, I can say that the social scene in Iowa City is far and away better than Ames. (For this reason my group of Iowa friends dubbed the rival city Lames.) One the biggest things I took away from my time in Iowa City was how I learned to interact with 'normal' people, or non-engineers. Most of my friends were in the Liberal Arts so had more of a business personality rather than science/math. It was nice to be able to get away from the engineering world I spent so much time in.One nice thing I'd like to add about the campus of Iowa is that it is integrated with the 'downtown' of Iowa City so that places are easy to get to and you still feel like you're in a small city, not just a bunch of campus buildings. That's something that I think makes Iowa a little different from most campuses.
