Use the Treasury Department’s tracker:Visit the “Get My Payment” page that the IRS has set up on its website. To monitor the status of your payment and track it, click (or tap) on the blue “Get My Payment” button. You’ll be taken to a page about authorized use; go ahead and click (or tap) OK.On the Get My Payment page, enter your Social Security number (or taxpayer ID number), your date of birth, your address and zip code. That works either by submitting a financial product that includes a routing and account number with it, whether it be a bank account or prepaid debit card. The easiest way to make sure that the IRS has the most accurate picture of your financial situation and personal whereabouts is by submitting your 2020 tax return. You now have until May 17 to submit your 2020 tax return, after the IRS on March 17 announced it was delaying the deadline by a month. However, given the unprecedented and unconventional nature of the current tax season, the Treasury Department and IRS may have already attempted to send out your payment before your tax information was processed. You could also update your mailing address by submitting a Form 8822, Change of Address, or notifying the IRS orally of your move. But be prepared: You might experience delays waiting for confirmation, given that the IRS has already begun distributing these stimulus checks. What should one do in order for their spouse to receive ones social security benefits after being diagnosed terminal pancreatic cancer? Should one (63 yo) apply for retirement benefits or apply for SSDI or both?

To be clear I am answering this question as if the OP is the wage earner who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer at age 63. The wage earner is asking what they should do for their spouse to receive benefits. I am assuming that the wage earner is no longer working and the work stoppage was recent. It is unknown if the wage earner receives any other benefits, which may alter the strategy due to their financial situation. One should apply via appointment with SSA to file for both retirement benefits and disability benefits. Retirement benefits can start immediately, at a reduced amount for age before the Full Retirement Age. Disability benefits take some time to process, and there is a five full calendar month waiting period from the month of disability onset before payment eligibility can start. For example, a wage earner feels poorly enough to stop working on December 20, 2020. They don’t know what is wrong and seek medical help. On January 6, 2021 they receive the bad news. It is stage 4 pancreatic cancer. They get an appointment with SSA to file benefits on January 28, 2021. The onset date would be December 20, 2020. The waiting period would be January 2021 to May 2021. The first payment month would be June 2021, payable in July. The Retirement application month of election would likely be January 2021 in this scenario but the SSA Claims Representative would help you understand your options. The retirement benefits would likely be paid out via direct deposit within days of the application, barring unlikely entitlement complications. So money would be coming in while the Disability application was being processed, and when that is allowed, the Retirement benefit would be converted to the Disability benefit. The Disability benefit amount would be higher.Special processes are used to prioritize the handling of terminal illness cases. I often saw terminal illness cases ready to pay BEFORE the first possible payment month came. The spouse, if they are of age and not working, could/should also file for their own retirement benefits and for spouse’s benefits. As always, a person first gets their own benefit amount and if the spouse’s benefit is higher, would get the difference in the payment amount to equal the spouse’s benefit amount. If the spouse is receiving any amount of spouse’s benefits at the time of the wage earner’s passing, no additional application would be needed. The spouse’s benefit would automatically be converted to a surviving spouse’s benefit. The computation is different, so that benefit will assuredly be higher. You should go to The United States Social Security Administration and establish your Social Security account and research benefits and the application process there. You can also make appointments and many times actually complete the application online.Good Luck!
