PDF Editor FAQ

Which celebrities look harmless but are secretly badasses?

I’m assuming you didn’t mean only Hollywood celebrities.Ian Fleming springs readily to mind amongst non-actors, since James Bond was based on several of Fleming’s personal experiences as a military intelligence officer and a commando during World War II. There’s even a movie based on his (dramatized) exploits - Age of Heroes (2011)! Kind of hard to beat the gent who was involved in the Enigma codebreaking exploits, formed a covert operations unit and was commended by foreign governments for helping their officers escape from capture by Nazis! (Ian Fleming)It’s also quite well known that Oliver Stone was an infantryman in Vietnam, since Platoon was based on his experiences during service. But it’s lesser known that Stone was highly decorated for his bravery - “For his service, his military awards include the Bronze Star with "V" Device for heroism, the Purple Heart with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster to denote two awards, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.” (Oliver Stone)An actor whose military career is often (sadly) overlooked was David Niven. Quite ironic given that Niven built his career around playing the cynical military man (Guns of Navarone, Bridge on the River Kwai). It’s even more astonishing considering Niven had given up the army life and moved to Hollywood before WW II, and rejoined the British Army in 1939. To my knowledge, he was the only Hollywood star taking part in the invasion of Normandy (though not in the landings on D-Day). Niven started the war as a lieutenant and ended it as a lieutenant colonel! (David Niven)[On a sidenote, Timothy Dalton was the first actor to have played James Bond on screen - officially or otherwise - to not have served in the armed forces.]He wasn’t the only celebrity in Normandy though - J.D. Salinger actually participated in the D-Day landings, and fought his way up to Germany via the Battle of the Bulge, before being reassigned to Millitary Intelligence. (J. D. Salinger)Dennis Farina used to be both in the US Army and Chicago PD, which means he’s pretty badass. He used to be in the burglary division of CPD, which couldn’t have been a low stress job. Farina even got his break in the movies starting out a police consultant. (Dennis Farina)Coming back to badasses-turned-authors, there are a few who aren’t as well known as Ian Fleming. Roald Dahl for one. While he’s best known for his children’s stories and creepy short stories for older readers, many people forget that Dahl was a highly distinguished fighter pilot and was a confirmed “ace” with 5 aerial victories. He flew for the Royal Air Force in Africa, Greece and present-day Israel during World War II, before being taken off flying duty for ill health. He was subsequently made a British diplomat and a spy! While not in the James Bond category, Dahl played an important role in pushing British interests in to the American people during the war. (Roald Dahl)Frederick Forsyth is another of this league of spies-turned-writers. While he wasn’t officially a part of it, Forsyth was acting as an “asset” for MI6 when working as a journalist in Biafra (now in Nigeria). (Frederick Forsyth)Noel Coward may no longer be the household name he used to be, but the playwright and filmwriter was a spy too! He worked for British Intelligence during World War II, though in a more limited capacity than say Fleming or Dahl. (Noël Coward)And the last (to my knowledge) of the spy-author-celebrity brigade, but certainly not the least, would be Julia Child! She worked with the predecessor of the CIA, the Office of Strategic Services as a researcher and subsequently as a field agent. If ever there was need for a female spy template, look no further than Child. Sadly her exploits tend to be overshadowed by her later fame as a food writer, which were an offshoot of her work in developing shark repellents! (Julia Child)Concluding now with the celebrity secret agents, Greta Garbo was an MI6 asset during World War II, well after she had become a huge star. While her role isn’t very well known, she apparently played an important role as a connection between British Intelligence and the Swedish royal family, as well as playing a role in the rescue of Danish Jews. (Greta Garbo)While there have been several others who may have served in the armed forces, police or other occupations which put them in harms way, these are the ones I know of who’ve seen actual combat or have been involved in real life espionage (or counter-espionage) operations.

How much can you make for specing a TV show script?

Nothing other than a job writing for a TV show.A spec script for a TV program is a writing sample - an audition - for a job writing for that show, or another show that may have a similar voice or subject matter. They are not looking at the story, but are looking at how well you know that show, and how your writing fits into that story template. If you write a spec for CHICAGO PD, the producers at CPD would probably not look at your script, but other shows like CPD would look at it.Star Trek’s production offices were the only place that I know of that ever looked at unsolicited spec scripts. 99.999% of those scripts were never seen as actual productions.Do not ever think you can sell your spec script to the show you are speccing! It is your calling card, your audition, your resume’ - and nothing more! You will have a much better life if you understand that.
