There are a few in the US. There used to be many more. From 1868 until 1970, the whole University of California system was tuition free. All four of my grandparents and my great grandfather went to either Berkley or UCLA for free.Today there are a few in the US that are free and a few that make it free for those whose families make less than 60,000–75,000 depending on the school. The median family income in the US is 55,000.Berea College is tuition free. Many receive support for room and board as well. Students must work 10 hours per week in one of 130 departments. It is a 4 year liberal arts college in Kentucky. 1,600 students. 32 majors. 1 on 3 is international or a ethnic minority. It rates it the 60th best liberal arts college in the nation, 3rd for Most Innovative Schools and 10th for "Best Undergraduate Teaching”.And Coopers Union was free until 2014. It is a huge scandal that it stopped. They grossly mismanaged funds. Now everyone gets at least half tuition free. It will have present a plan to go back to being free due to a consent decree by Jan 2018. It is in NYC and has 900 students. It offers undergrad and grad degrees in architecture, fine arts and engineering.Antioch College was free until the class that entered in 2014. It is unclear what will happen in the future. It is in Ohio with 270 students. It is a four year college. It has 11 majors. Anthropology, History, Literature, Media Arts, Visual Arts, Performance, Philosophy, Psychology, and Political Economy, Biomedical Science and Environmental Science.College of the Ozarks is tuition free. It is a four year liberal arts college in Missouri. It has 30 majors. The program requires students to work 15 hours a week at an on-campus work station and two 40-hour work weeks during breaks. A summer work program is available to cover room and board costs. They have 1,400 students.Macaulay Honors College. Is a tuition free undergrad honors college with 2000 students in NYC.Barclay College is a small Quaker College with fee tuition in Kansas. It has 200 students who study religion.Curtis Institute of Music located in Philadelphia, PA offers courses of study leading to a performance diplomas. It is tuition free. It has 167 student and most become professional musicians.Alice Lloyd College is a tuition free four year college in Kentucky. It has about 600 students. It offers 18 major degree programs and eight pre-professional programs.Webb Institute is a small marine engineering and naval architecture 4 year college. It is tuition free. It is on Long Island, NY. It has 80 students. Almost all immediately get employment in the marine trades.MIT, the famous school in Massachusetts, offers free tuition to students with family income of less than $75,000 per year. It has 10,900 students. 4,500 are undergrads.Yale University meets 100% of demonstrated financial need and if a family earns a total gross income of 65k or less, they are not expected to pay for their child’s tuition. It has about 5,300 undergraduateOver 70% of Stanford undergraduates receive financial aid. Parents with an income below $60,000 and typical assets for this income range don’t have to pay anything towards tuition. In addition, for parents with an income below $100,000 and typical assets for this income range, the expected parent contribution is low enough to make sure all tuition charges receive coverage with need-based scholarships, state and federal grants.Duke students with families with an income less than $60k don’t have to make a contribution to their child’s education.Cornell Parents with a combined income of less than $60,000 and assets totaling less than $100,000 pay nothing for their child’s education.The US military academies are free, but that is not for international students nor do I think it is anything anyone should consider.

I’m putting aside the “attitude” and “chemistry” bits, because none of us who have never been in a major league clubhouse can authoritatively talk about whether and how much it matters. As far as I can tell, “chemistry” tends to correlate weakly with winning and if anything is more a result of it than a cause.Skipping Machado’s age-19 season when he played 51 games….They’re the same age (OK, Machado is three months older)Machado played one more season than Bogaerts, getting into 51 games at age 19 compared to Bogaerts’ 14 games at age 20.That works out to just about one extra season’s playing time for Machado, 167 games and 842 PA.Per 162 games, Machado has6 more hits1 fewer double1 fewer triple15 more HRthe same number of walks10 fewer strikeouts2 points lower batting average, 4 points lower OBP, and 35 more points SLGThat’s a pretty big gap. If you could have Xander or Xander plus 15 HR, it’s not a tough choice.Bogaerts is better at stealing bases (49/12, 80%) than Machado (53/24, 69%), but that’s not enough to make a lot of difference. A smart manager would tell Machado not to run as much.Even looking at postseatson, Xander has 130 PAs at 219/300/333, Machado 99 at 213/268/382. Worse OBP, better SLG, again not a huge difference overall.Fielding? Machado has 11.3 dWAR, Bogaerts -0.4. But most of that was collected while Machado was playing 3B. His numbers at short look about like Bogaerts’.If I were starting from scratch and picking one of them? I’d take Machado. Would I move Bogaerts to make room for Machado? That’s a lot less clear. Machado is a free agent now and will command a high salary; Bogaerts is arbitration eligible. There’s probably $15M difference between them this year, and while that gap will close after X hits free agency after 2020, I’d guess that Machado will still get on the order of $5M/year more.I don’t think I’d pay the difference for Machado.Now that’s analysis. As a Sox fan, I hope they keep X. He’s good enough and I think they need to work on other parts of the team, especially if — and God only knows why — they’re planning to cut payroll.

As you correctly pointed out, Puig has been a juggernaut since being called up. Even before that, last year in the minors and this year in AA, he was playing like a man amongst boys. He even crushed it in Spring Training with a .517/.500/.828 triple slash.As a result, I don't think that anyone can truly say. He generates explosive bat speed and one of the strongest arms in the game. Despite being a free-swinger, he squares the ball up a lot. And although he seems a bit more athletic, to me he reminds me a lot of Vladimir Guerrero.Puig's fast enough to play in Center at this point, but he's probably best suited to Right Field. As a result, most of his value will come from his bat. To that end, despite his hot start, there are a few red flags. Given those 90 MLB PA's, he has only 2 non-intentional walks. And although he clearly worked on seeing more pitches in AA (15 BB's in 167 PA's) a lot of that was pitchers working around him in a weaker minor league lineup. This spring, when pitchers tend to come right at hitters, he didn't walk, but he did strike out 11 times in 58 AB's. That strike out rate has stayed consistent despite his incredible average. His BABIP at this point is .500, and I don't care how many balls you square up, the league average is typically around .300. The best hitters, Cabrera and Mauer, at their best are around .400 in BABIP. As a result, you can expect at least a .100 point drop in Puig's average over time, and considering his tendency to swing at balls out of the strike zone, its likely to fall even more.So he definitely has a few warts that predict a pretty sharp regression in Batting Average and thus On-Base Percentage. But here's the thing, the power is real. He's hit for power everywhere and with that type of bat speed, if he makes solid contact, balls will go over the wall. So I don't think it's unrealistic to predict him as a perennial 30+ HR player. Given his other tools, I think that makes him a perennial All-Star. If he tightens up his strike zone, that is swinging at better pitches instead of all pitches, I think he could be an MVP caliber player. But that is the big question, with this success, will he make the necessary adjustments to become a megastar? You can be sure that pitchers are going to quickly start adjusting their games, more breaking balls, less strikes. When that happens, if Puig can be disciplined enough to take some walks and swing less, the OBP will shoot up, the K rate will go down, and he'll have even more opportunities to get into the counts where he can unleash his power.Quick Synopsis: Puig is an incredible talent, who has the ceiling of a perennial MVP candidate, but he needs to improve plate discipline in order to consistently play at level that even resembles his current production. If he doesn't, he'll likely settle into a perennial All-Star role who plays great defense in RF and hits 30+ HR's while striking out well over a 100 times a year.And one (last) quick note, how exciting is this guy?!? I've really enjoyed watching him play the game this past month.
