PDF Editor FAQ
What do you think about Nirmala Sitharaman's statement "Slump in the auto industry is because millennials prefer to use Ola & Uber"?
You know what, let’s just ignore all facts and take Ms. Finance Minister’s words-on their face value — the current slump in the auto-industry are indeed solely due to millennial's preference for ride-hailing and sharing alternatives like Ola and Uber.Let’s do that. But then Ms. Finance Minister, tell me whose fault is that?90%+ of the millennial population you have so very conveniently blamed resides in one of the 6 metros in India.Ms. Finance Minister, where is the infrastructure to support that many cars? The roads in these cities are congested. During monsoons, they are either flooded due to a lack of proper sewer system or pockmarked with potholes as if they were made of cardboard. During peak hours on weekdays, it takes an average Mumbaikar an hour to traverse a mere 5–10 km on road. Why would people choose to buy their own cars if that would just mean spending 20% of their waking hours stuck in traffic?Ms. Finance Minister, where do I park my car if I ever buy one?My building charges 3000–4000 for a simple covered parking spot. Why are there no regulations on basic amenities housing societies should provide?Ms. Finance Minister, why is everything so expensive? If I have to buy a small, 600 sq ft house in mainland Mumbai, I will have to shell out anywhere between ₹1–2 Crore. Housing loans are currently at 9–10% even though the Economy is crawling at 5–6% and inflation is hovering just over 3%.A person with a ₹1 Crore loan for 30 years, at 9% per annum, would end up paying ₹90,000 per month for 360 months, finally repaying 3x the principal. Why?Where is affordable housing? Where are strong real estate regulations? What is RERA doing to address the issue of huge amount of unsold inventory?[1][1][1][1]Ms. Finance Minister, where are the 100 SMART CITIES that were promised? Why does a country with 28 states not even have 28 major cities that can drive economic growth and create jobs? I hope you do realize that the metros in India are under considerable pressure and most of it would go away if only the same millennials had other options.I prefer Uber because it is cheaper than owning a car. If I have to travel within the city, I would gladly take an auto for short distances, or the locals/metro for longer ones. While travelling intercity, I would prefer a flight over a train.I can’t afford a house in Mumbai, so I will rent one.Despite earning in the top 2% in the country, I still can’t afford a house. Let that settle in!I pay about 20–22% of my total income as taxes. I then pay another 10–12% as GST on goods and services I buy.And what do I get in return for that?Nothing. The infrastructure all over the nation is in shambles. Education costs are skyrocketing. Healthcare is expensive. Except for water, every other amenity has to be paid for (except for the Delhi folks being ruled by their benevolent leader who is handing out freebies like Oprah).I was recently looking at the newest Alienware gaming system to buy — the Area 51.The most powerful version sells for $3800 in USA.which at the current exchange rate of 72, comes to about about ₹2.75 lakhs. But do you know what it is selling for in India?Yep. 80% more expensive. You know, after you slap all your various customs and excise duties on top of the reseller margins and the transportation costs from USA.On that note, why is everything produced outside of India? What is the plan for making India a true manufacturing hub?In face of all of this, do you still expect Indians to keep buying things they don’t need so that you can have a nifty little scorecard to show for your term as the Finance Minister of India?Blaming millennials is easy. But the auto industry is not only cars and bikes, right? Why are farm vehicles not selling?[2]Why is commercial vehicle sales plummeting?[3] Wouldn’t we need gigantic trucks if we are to complete the ambitious ₹ 100 lakh crore investment plan over the next 5 years? What is being done to push for higher automotive exports? Despite being the 4th largest producer of automobiles[4], India does not even sell 10% of the automobiles that Germany does.[5] Why?Your job is to provide solutions, not explanations.May be read the JD again? Or is that too a “millennial phenomenon”?Footnotes[1] Unsold houses at all-time high of 12.76 lakhs in India's top 30 cities[1] Unsold houses at all-time high of 12.76 lakhs in India's top 30 cities[1] Unsold houses at all-time high of 12.76 lakhs in India's top 30 cities[1] Unsold houses at all-time high of 12.76 lakhs in India's top 30 cities[2] Tractor sales growth pace hits three-year low in FY’19 - ET Auto[3] Slowdown pushes commercial vehicle manufacturers in a trench[4] List of countries by motor vehicle production - Wikipedia[5] Car Exports by Country
How were/are the music systems of huge rock concerts maintained and organized?
Ginormous outdoor systems started with Showco in Texas. The biggest promoter in the US was an outfit called Concerts West. They noticed particular problems with the big outdoor shows where some seats were up front and some were an 1/8th of a mile away. Concerts West provided the R&D money for Showco to develop the sound reinforcement technology still in use these days. The exception being the difference between analog and digital. The best system I've ever seen was a long time ago but it was legendary.Supertramp Sound toured more than Supertramp. Everyone in the business wanted to use Supertramp Sound so the system was on the road and earning even when the band was home in England. The sound was perfect. That was fundamental. Didn't matter if you were in an arena with NO acoustics or a theater with PERFECT acoustics. No cases, no covers, no fuss, every cabinet had it's own set of wheels. You just rolled the bottoms into place and laid them on their sides (4-12 per side depending on the venue) -- or, recessed hooks/handles allowed you to fly them. Next came the mid-range boxes stacked on top and then the high range boxes. The crossovers were built in and you just plugged everything in in series. ONE GUY could set up the whole sound system (it got tricky with the tweeters at 16' UP but you could stagger the boxes and climb them like a pyramid). One snake and on-stage break out box handled up to 120 mic's so there was always headroom and the board was a stand up with screw on legs of various lengths so it was the perfect height no matter if you were laying it out over rows of theater seats or on polo grounds. A splitter sent feeds to the on-stage monitor mix.Maintenance of these systems can be a certified bitch. There's a guy out of Nashville named "Cheek" who's aces. Loves analog and has gotten used to making something wonderful come out of whatever he's given. I recall the day we were at lunch in Napa, California and found a statue commemorating the first loudspeaker ever made. Big day for a couple of tube types. You have to be a wire-head AND have an ear. You have to be able to troubleshoot and repair "hot" (Plug your mic into a working channel while you disassemble a non-working channel, fix it, and replace it then plug it back in ... all while mixing). These days that means you have to be so immersed in the systems that you are a Double-E (electronic engineer -- like a doctor for wires and electrons) AND still have the hearing of a 20 something (the audible spectrum degrades in human hearing after your teens .... for everyone, not just techs. Teenagers can have ring tones their parents cannot hear). The really old boards had a separate mono, tube-type amplifiers for each of up to 12 channels. Absent switching was considered all the rage by the late 60's (putting the switch AFTER the amp so that it didn't POP when you hit the switch and made the input HOT). Pretty pedestrian stuff by today's standards. You only had one compressor and one reverb unit and IF you had EQ it was only 3 or 4 band, all for the total output of the board. The board on which I learned was a Gates. 8 channels and 6 feet wide. The first time Tom Dowd produced in England there was only ONE 8-track machine in all of Europe! I had a 16 track Neve at home which was better than most professional studios in those days.Really good filters for dopplers and flangers didn't come along until 74 or so and we didn't see the first ARP synthesizer or the Vocoder until then either. The MOOG and the Harry were too expensive to buy or maintain outside of college campuses and no one could teach their use.Tape came in 1" widths and generally rolled at 30ips; 7.5ips on 1/4" tape for 2 track was common in broadcast where stereo was often deemed excessive and unnecessary until the increased interest of FM in 71.The first bands I live-produced used Atlas horns for the P.A. and a Bogen amp, about 40watt. There was no need to mic the guitars, bass or drums and if you had a keyboard it was generally something portable like a Hammond B3 organ with a Leslie.Even by the late 70's it was tough to find a hall in the U.S. that had more than single phase power. When you compare all that against the systems LiveNation has put together for the likes of U2 or Lady Gaga, or the Stones last tour, the difference is between bandaids and rocket surgery.
Can a physician be certified in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Emergency Medicine?
You can but you would have to complete training in all three areas. In order to be eligible to sit for the board exam in any specialty you have to complete an accredited training program (residency) in that area.A number of years ago physicians who had trained in another speciality could become eligible to sit for the emergency medicine boards by working in an emergency department for a certain number of years. This was known as the “practice track.” There are still physicians today who did their residency in IM or FM, worked in an ED for the requisite time and sat for the EM boards and if the passed became board certified in EM. The practice track closed in 1990 (the year I finished my EM residency). Thereafter in order to become certified in EM you have to complete an accredited residency in EM.As someone else answered there may be a few accredited programs that combine FM/EM or IM/EM in 4 years instead of the usual 3 which is the usual length for IM, FM and EM. But that would only make you board eligible in those two areas, not all three. I have never heard of anyone training in both FM and IM. There is a lot of overlap between those two and I don’t know of any combined programs for those two. After medical school I did one year of IM, didn’t like it and switched to pediatrics. I competed my pediatrics residency and went right into an EM residency. I received a year credit for the 4 years of residency I had already done and was able to finish EM in 2 years instead of the usual 3.So, there are different ways to go about getting the accredited training you need to sit for the boards but if would be very time consuming to try to get board certified in all three ares mentioned. I don’t know why you would want to anyway. If you want to be an ER doc then do EM. If you want to just see adults do IM. If you want to see a balance of everything do FM. There are many physicians trained in IM or FM that do urgent care. Most ED’s these days, except in very small and/or rural area require board certification in EM.
