No, they aren’t.I speak Finnish as my native language. Spanish is my second most fluent language. I have learned Portuguese after Spanish and am quite fluent in it, too. I once studied Estonian for a year, but don’t really know how to speak it.Based on my experience of studying all these four languages, I can safely say that Spanish and Portuguese are much more mutually intelligible than Finnish and Estonian, by a remarkable margin.Being fluent in Spanish I was able to hold a conversation with my Brazilian friends before having even started to study Portuguese.One of my Brazilian friends started to teach me at one point. First we had a book and tried to study it the traditional way, going through grammar and vocabulary; but very soon we noticed it was waste of time, so we changed the method and just talked. She would explain me things that I didn’t understand, which were basically things that differed from Spanish.Later I took a one month summer course here in Helsinki and a one month intensive course in Portugal, and after that I was almost fluent in Portuguese and ready to study it on the academic level at the University.Finnish is my native language, so I’m presumably more fluent in it than I can ever be in Spanish. I took a one year language course in Estonian, but didn’t learn to really speak it. I do understand quite a lot of Estonian, especially in its written form, but there’s definitely a bigger difference between these two.To be able to speak Estonian a native Finnish speaker has to learn many more tricks than a native Spanish speaker who wants to learn Portuguese. There are also many more false friends and much more outdated vocabulary that you can guess in some context but in another context can’t.However, Finnish and Estonian are still close enough to radically speed up the learning process, just less so than Spanish and Portuguese.
