PDF Editor FAQ

What’s the most unprofessional thing a doctor has said to you?

^Not the actual doctor, but looked a lot like him.I had a doctor scream at me to shut up and refuse to answer my questions.I have several serious genetic medical problems and have always had issues with my digestive system, but when I was in college I had close to a year of incredibly painful issues. Have me in tears kind of pain. I saw several doctors and finally was sent to a specialist. He first stood in the open doorway talking on the phone about a medical conference he was to attend for probably close to 10 minutes. Seemed like a pleasant conversation. Keep in mind, I am sitting there bottomless, covered only by one of those hospital gowns in full view of the nurses station and people walking by. Made me really uncomfortable. (I was raised like a Puritan, not super comfortable with my body). He then came in the office and closed the door, didn't say hello, didn't ask what the problem was, anything. (I know he already had all that information on my chart, but it's common courtesy in the doctor/patient relationship.)He just gets straight into examining me for what felt like less than 5 seconds, tells me to take a laxative every day. I said “for how long?”. He said “forever”. I knew that wasn't right, so then I asked about the pain and if it was normal. (No WebMD then). Doctor didn't answer. I thought that he somehow must not have heard me, even though it was just the two of us in the room, so I asked again. He looked at me, yelled “Shut up!” (seriously, full on screaming) and proceeded to write on his pad. I was dumbfounded. Our interaction to this point was cold, but not openly hostile. Being a kid and also in shock, I didn't say anything else. Neither did he. He left the room and a nurse came to escort me to the front desk to pay.I have medical issues and have met with hundreds of doctors in my life, but that was still the weirdest interaction I've ever had with a doctor, let alone a highly recommended one.

Would humans be better off without pain receptors?

Let’s ask someone who’s a bit of an expert to answer this:Meet Ashlyn Blocker, otherwise known as “The Girl that feels no pain”When she was born she didn’t cry, she also didn’t cry when she was a couple of months older and had a terrible diaper rash. She had a massive swollen eye, that was thought to be “pink eye” at first but later turned out to be a corneal abrasion. She didn’t cry or wimper in pain at any of that. In fact she was extremely calm, that the doctor found it strange and referred the family to another medical examiner. She was also about to chew her own tounge, as she was teething. As a toddler she broke her ankle, seared the skin off her palms, burned her palms, got bitten by red ants while playing in the backyard. All that generated no reaction or discomfort from her whatsoever. Unlike normal toddlers. After a few doctor’s consultations, her family discovered that she was born with a “Congenital insensitivity to pain” or “Congenital analgesia” a condition that inhibits the body from sensing physical pain. At the time of her diagnosis, Ashlyn’s condition was rare, extremely rare in fact that the doctor himself told Ashlyn’s parents that they are “the only ones out there” not much was known about it, except the few cases of people who were all insensitive to pain and most of them ended up with mutilations and early deaths. So far, there have only been 20 cases ever recorded of this condition. It’s due to a genetic mutation in the SCN9A gene. [1][1][1][1]Ashlyn could sense pressure, she could feel little pricks but she is highly resistant to extreme temperatures. This is why she frequently burns her hands from boiling water. Not to mention, she’s extremely accident prone and has to be extra cautious. Otherwise, she could get injured without realizing it, or without having the incentive to shake any physical discomfort. When asked: “what was pain for her” and how did she perceive “hurt” Ashlyn couldn’t give a plausible answer, because she hadn’t experienced being in anguished physical pain before. [2][2][2][2]Pain is a blessing in disguise. It might sound cool to be like Ashlyn, to be able to break one hundred bones or put your hand in a bowl filled with boiling water & still feel nothing afterwards. However, your body will suffer the consequences nonetheless. Her skin isn’t bulletproof, it’s normal skin like the rest of us, her body is still vulnerable to injuries. Which makes it much more dangerous.Footnotes[1] Congenital insensitivity to pain[1] Congenital insensitivity to pain[1] Congenital insensitivity to pain[1] Congenital insensitivity to pain[2] The Hazards of Growing Up Painlessly[2] The Hazards of Growing Up Painlessly[2] The Hazards of Growing Up Painlessly[2] The Hazards of Growing Up Painlessly

I have always had dark brown eyes. Within the past year or so, from the outside in, my eyes have slowly turned green to the point where now more than 50% of my iris is green. What could cause eye color to change?

My paternal family and relatives have progressive eye color changes as they aged, almost 95%. Some went through medical examination but found no issues.Majority had brown changed to hazel on the outer circle just like the picture. Some just turned into lighter honey color. Mine started on the outer ring. My eye sight is not perfect, but I can adapt to light and darkness very quickly, faster than average. This could be genetic. As to what contributed to this, that needs some studying.
