PDF Editor FAQ

What is the size of the real estate data / information provider industry in annual dollars?

Tough question and I don't know of a single source. First there are a lot of different types of real estate data providers - residential transaction and property characteristic focus, commercial focus, title information, real estate tax companies, document image, foreclosure focused, flood, hazard disclosure, rental, analytics & fraud (mortgage). The large players have non-real estate related businesses. You may have to wade through the financial reports of the public companies to get the info you want and make educated guesses about the rest. The main players are: Corelogic (spun off from First American), LPS (spun off from Fidelity), PropertyInfo (part of Stewart Title), MDA Dataquick (recently part of an acquisition of Macdonald Detweilers Real Estate Data businesses by TPG Capital for $850 Million), DataTree (owned by First American), Data Trace (owned by First American), PropertyInsight (part of Fidelity), and lots of other regional and local players. I just realized I didn't list any real estate tax servicing companies. Good Luck.

How does one address an alumnus/alumna in oral & written English? Are there titles? Only a title, only his/her name, or a title and a name?

In English-speaking cultures, "senior " and "junior" titles/honorifics generally don't exist in standard forms of address, aside from familial/generational naming traditions. If a person has a professional title or rank (Dr., Prof., Colonel, etc.), it should be used in addressing that person unless/until an informal form of address is permitted by the individual. If the title is unknown, consider using Mr. or Ms. But please don't use Mrs. or Miss unless you are certain it is acceptable to/you are corrected by the individual (a woman's marital status is rarely relevant). Whatever you do, please don't follow the US model: Americans in the US are in a rush to informality, wanting to hug (!) and use first names, sometimes upon introduction; this presumption of familiarity is off-putting and downright rude. (Full disclosure: I am a US American, so I'm comfortable pointing out this failing of my people without hostility.)

Who were the biggest traitors of Vietnam in history?

Disclosure: I’ve been getting a lot of comments on this and would like to clarify, this is about people who DEFECTED to Vietnam and served under the Vietnamese. They are NOT of Vietnamese origin but served the Nation of Vietnam. I understand I may not have understood what exactly the question asked for, but it may serve somebody else looking at this question for answers. Therefore…If you’re referring to the Vietnam War, two in particular come to mind, McKinley Nolan and Robert Garwood. They might not be the biggest, but certainly the most controversial in my mind.Nolan was part of the US Army’s 1st Division coming out of Texas. One night he reportedly disappeared from his base camp somewhere in Tay Ninh in the fall of 1967 and eventually was taken in by the Vietcong. Eventually he started turning up on Communist broadcasts all over, talking about how African American G.I.’s should join him because there’s no racial discrimination on the “other side” and they would be treated well. Whether he was forced to say these things or not is unsure, but we do know is that the Pentagon instantly labelled him a traitor and was essentially unable to return to the United States permanently without being arrested.McKinley Nolan was never captured and had disappeared after the war. There was reports that he settled somewhere along the Viet-Cambodian border, living a quiet life in the wilderness where, in the ‘80s and ‘90s, many visitors have claimed to have met him. Others said that he somehow made it to Cuba and had been promised sanctuary under Fidel Castro from armed forces searching for him. The remainder of reports say he was killed by members of the Khmer Rouge Regime in the last year of the Vietnam War.Robert Garwood was a Private First Class with the USMC stationed at Da Nang. Mysteriously, he went missing in 1965, and reappeared in 1979.According to him, he had been surrounded when trying to get back to camp and valiantly tried to fend off the Vietcong with his sidearm. He ended up wounded, captured, and beaten as he was taken through VC territory. Ultimately, he ended up at a POW camp where he suffered malaria and dysentery. While in the camp, he was taught Vietnamese by a Green Beret before he died of torture two years later. Garwood was then used as propaganda due to the fact he could speak Vietnamese really well, until ‘79 when he was released and returned to the US.Pretty much every soldier who had encountered Garwood said his story was “Bulls*t.”An officer at the time Garwood left base camp said he was relieved of duty, therefore there was no reason why he left. Garwood told people he had to meet an official at China Beach, but the soldiers at that camp said he told them he was going to do laundry. A POW said Garwood told him he had been in Da Nang just relaxing before being captured, with no wounds.a document surfaced, titled “Fellow Soldier’s Appeal” was signed by Garwood while in prison, urging the soldiers to defect to the Vietcong’s side. As well, multiple POW’s said Garwood was sent to multiple sessions that talked about the Vietcong’s ideals, wore a VC uniform officially becoming a member of the “Liberation front,” and changing his name to “Nguyen the fighter.” He has become a prison translator for the VC, urging soldiers to switch to the VC’s side. Upon his release in ‘79 and return to the US, he was found guilty of treason. His attorney pleaded insanity and he was subject to harsh torture and persuasive propaganda numerous times. Therefore, he was dishonorably discharged, and he had to forfeit roughly $150,000 in payments. Due to the time table of evidence not coinciding he was never really “officially” found guilty.fun fact: because both these people disappeared around the same time during Vietnam, intelligence labelled them “Salt & Pepper” Salt meaning Garwood, Pepper meaning Nolan.EDIT: Some people told me to include her, but Jane Fonda AKA “Hanoi Jane”She’s another popular candidate for this topic as well. Granted, I have not read much info on her, but from what I know, she was a celebrity turned anti-war activist who led protests in Maryland. She was invited to come to North Vietnam where she openly spoke about the “wrongful” bombings of villages by the Americans and lied about the conditions of POW camps. In addition, she spent time with NVA troops and took pictures with them, before coming back to the United States.
