Some of the double standards that answers on here and elsewhere are exposing are eye watering.First of all- according to the Independent- there are 285,000 UK citizens in Spain. Finally, this is the Spanish government’s remit- not the EU’sI am seeing answers on here suggesting that this is not ethical, or that this is the EU bullying the Brits, once again. After all, if they had built a life in Spain, it is unethical to force them to leave it. Well, OK. But if you believe that, you also, by necessity have to embrace the following arguments.- If it is not ethical to require citizens who pay no tax to leave a different country, it is unethical to do the same to foreign citizens in the UK. That plumber from somewhere East of Berlin who works cash in hand, and pays no tax has as much right to be in the UK as you do.- The Windrush scandal and the hostile environment cannot just be swept under the mat. People who had been living here for decades were expelled, often after the very government that was expelling them destroyed their landing cards. This is such a monstrous injustice that no government that carried it out could possibly have any democratic legitimacy to continue in power. Give the scale of the thing, the only honourable action is a mass cabinet resignation.- The same goes for a Home Secretary who lashes out against “lefty lawyers” trying to work against the deportations of people who have built something of a life in the UK being deported. If it is unethical to ask Brits in Spain to leave for not paying tax, it is clearly unethical to attack the profession that defends people living in the UK from forced deportation. Therefore, if you defend the people returning from Spain, you must surely reject Patel as having any legitimacy anywhere near the heart of government (notwithstanding her various shenanigans in Israel).There is logical way out of this. And that is British Exceptionalism- that different rules apply to “us” and “them”. But we are assured that this is not the case. Brexit was not about exceptionalism, we are told. It is about something greater and nobler and slightly undefined.But you cannot reject exceptionalism and also reject the right of Spain to ask overseas citizens to meet certain conditions, and if they do not, ask them to leave the country. That’s what we expect of others. It’s what other should expect of us. After all, if we want ourselves to take back control of our borders, we have to embrace exceptionalism or accept the right and responsibility of others to do exactly the same.Failure to accept that exposes the rotten, us-first, pseudo-morality that is at the heart of this whole sorry project.
