Good question. Essentially, i5 is the same CPU as i7, only that its hyper-threading option is factory-disabled. If the hyper-threading is disabled in the BIOS for an i7 CPU, then it would have the same performance as a comparable i5.So how can Intel i5 CPU be faster than i7? In single-thread workloads, a comparable i5 can be faster if it has a higher basic clock speed. Note that I say “comparable” meaning of the same generation.Consequently, Intel CPU is evolving and for example, newer i5 may be faster than a much older i7. How is that possible?Well, just take a look at the newer i5–8400 which is a six-core CPU with turbo up to 3.8GHz, as it is a recent model so it is much newer than an old i7–2700k and consequently it performs much better than its older sibling.When PassMark benchmarking software is used to compare them, i5–8400 will score 11640 multicore and 2336 single-thread score, while the i7–2700k multi-core score is 8687 and 2005 points single-thread.Now, if you compare current-generation Intel CPU then a modern i7 which is not “gimped” in any way will always perform better than a comparable i5 model.

I lodged my claim form and a few weeks later got a call from the insurance company. They claimed they’d reviewed my case and decided the bike wasn’t worth $8400 after all, but only the $6000 I’d paid for it. So they told me they’d refund the difference in premium I’d paid for the higher value coverage (maybe $100) and pay me $6000 for the bike. Of course there was no way I would agree to this so we got into a protracted argument over the next few weeks (I couldn’t afford a lawyer).During one of our heated exchanges over the phone, I let slip the name of the motorcycle dealership that had done work on my bike the week before it was stolen, although I didn’t even realise it during the conversation. A couple of hours later I got a call from the dealership to let me know the insurance agent had called them and had tried to get them to say my bike was only worth $6K. Unfortunately for him, the service manager actually said something along the lines of “that bike was cherry and was worth at least $10K”. With an expert valuation like that as evidence (and the fact that I now knew about the valuation) the insurance company drew down a check for the total $8400 and cancelled my policy. In the years since, I estimate I’ve spent at least $30K on the various home, life, car, boat, etc. insurance products that I’ve bought, but not a single cent has been with that dodgy company.
