It’s a tie, with 11 Mustangs shot down each.The more famous of the two was Oberfeldwebel Heinrich Bartels, born in Linz, Austria, who started his Luftwaffe career in the summer of 1941 in Jagdgeschwader 26, named Schlagater in honor of Albert Leo Schlagater, World War One veteran and national hero who was executed by the French in 1923 for his sabotage campaign against the occupying force. He scored his first two kills, both Spitfires, over the Channel. Afterwards he moved east, to Jagdgeschwader 5 in the Arctic Front, where he scored 49 victories over Soviet aircraft.In the spring of 1943 he was transferred to Jagdgeschwader 27 ‘Afrika’ based in the Mediterranean, and went with the unit when it was moved to Germany and transferred to Reichsverteidigung duties.Bartels posing for the camera with the victory marks on the rudder of his Messerschmidt Bf 109 G-6 after his 70th victoryHe scored his last victory over a P-47 on 23 December 1944. His plane failed to return to base, and he was declared missing in action. He would be found years later in January 1968, his remains in the cockpit of his shot down fighter near the town of Bad Godesberg.Bartels scored 99 victories total, 49 over the VVS and 50 over the Western Allied air forces. His tally included 11 P-51’s, 14 P-38’s, 9 P-47’s, and 9 Spitfires.The second was Hauptmann Wilhelm Steinmann, a born Nürnberger six years older than Bartels. Steinmann was originally a bomber pilot, flying Heinkel He 111’s in the Kampfgeschwader 53 ‘Legion Condor’. He served in it for two years, served a short while afterwards as a technical officer in the II Fliegerkorps staff, before enlisting for conversion training to fly a fighter.Steinmann actually served in the same unit as Bartels for a short while: he was part of the Jagdgeschwader 27 ‘Afrika’ from October 1942, when he entered service as a fighter pilot; though they wouldn’t have served alongside each other: Steinmann was part of the unit’s 3. Staffel, at the time deployed in the Channel coast, while Bartels was in the 11. Staffel, at the time located in Greece.Steinmann’s service on the Channel coast ended on 1 June 1943, when he misidentified a Bf 109 G-6 piloted by Hauptmann Erich Hohagen, his direct commanding officer, and shot it down. Hohagen was simply wounded, but the accident saw Steinmann exiled to Romania, to the I. Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 4.When he arrived in Romania he had but two kills to his name. That would soon change.Steinmann started by shooting down two Consolidated B-24 Liberators down on 1 August 1943. By September he was promoted to Staffelkapitän and moved to Italy. He held command for the I. Gruppe as Gruppenkapitän for a short while in 1944 until it was turned to fellow ace Walter Hoeckner, and took over again when Hoeckner was killed in August.Steinmann ended the war flying a Me 262, having transferred to Ergänzungs-Jagdgeschwader 2 when JG 4 was disbanded in March 1945. He went on to score his last four kills in this unit, flying the Me 262.Wilhelm Steinmann ended the war with 44 kills, all but four of which were Western Allied aircraft. His tally included 11 P-51’s, 7 P-47’s, and six heavy bombers: three Consolidated B-24 Liberators, one North American B-25 Mitchell, and two Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses.
