First let us see, what the situation will be like if girls reservation is introduced. Currently general students get 50%of the seats in IIT's. So out of 100, we get 50 seats. If 14 extra seats are created and given to girls, then the general people will have 50/114 seats. So the percentage drops to 43%.Now the supporters of girls reservation argue that since extra seats are being created, general candidates will not suffer. These people have absolutely no idea of how things actually work inside IIT'S. Creating extra seats for girls may not directly seem to affect the general candidates, but indirectly it does. The quality of education in these institutions goes down. For example, the syllabus is downgraded, so that everyone is able to follow the courses. Students who want to learn more suffer as a result of this. They can of course learn extra things on their own, but it will not be as efficient as learning from a structured course. Even profs are sometimes reluctant to discuss things beyond our course, so that everyone is able to follow. As a result, those who actually want to learn some cool stuffs(as it is there are very few of them), get demotivated.Now, before you conclude that I am one of those who doesn't support girls empowerment, I would like to point out that I strongly believe girls deserve to get good quality education, but this is just not the way. Why doesn't the government accept the fact that it is because if the quality of education in government schools and backward mentality of a few Indian families that many girls are not able to make it to the IIT'S. So the solution is to improve the quality of teaching at the school level instead of providing non-deserving candidates with seats in the premier institutes of the country. Having more girls in IIT's by reserving seats doesn't mean that the quality of girls education has improved, it simply means that non-deserving candidate have been given seats, so that the government has something to show, when asked what it has done for improving girls education. So instead of providing girls with reservation, I feel the government should try improving the quality of school-level education by getting better teachers. But it seems as if they just want to get a false sense of satisfaction that they have done something for educating the girls of our country. Even if they do provide reservation, they should come up with a system in which the students who came by reservation are answerable to the institute for their performance in the institute. To give you an example my own roommate at IITB came by reservation, but here he has a perfect CGPA of 10. So he has shown that he really belongs here. But there are many people who somehow get through JEE using reservation and then feel as if there is nothing left to be achieved in their lives and waste their 4 years here and also the opportunity they got at the expense of some other deserving candidate. That is something I have a problem with.As it is the government is on a mission to open up an IIT in every state, because of which the quality and name of these institutions is rapidly going down. Now people classify IIT's into 2 different categories-old and new, which shows the purpose of opening of new IIT's is clearly not being served. More and more reservation will only degrade the quality further. Also such an environment of bias towards certain castes or gender will only force more and more people to go and work or study abroad and then we will have more questions on quora asking, what have IITians done for their country.But having said all this, we all know nothing's really gone a change no matter how many answers we have on quora regarding this topic. So chill- all the supporters of reservation.
