An interesting question… the Indian Navy, and indeed the entire Indian Armed Forces, is undergoing a phase of almost unprecedented build up and modernisation. Given the increasingly grim threat perceptions of our Top Brass and the worsening neighborhood, this comes as no surprise.Lets have a look at the projects being implemented right now (or in the near future) to have an idea of the navy of 2025.Project 15B: two Project 15B Viskhakapatnam class destroyers are under construction at the moment at Mazgaon docks, Mumbai and two more and planned. All four will have been atleast a few years in service by 2025 with the first one expected to get commissioned by 2018–19.This is the Khanderi, the second Scorpene class submarine, but look at the Vishakaptnam class destroyer behind.Project 17A: the Project 17A frigates are successors to the Shivalik class frigates and seven of these are planned. The ships will be built simultaneously between GRSE, Kolkata and Mazgaon. Construction is slated to be started in late 2017 with the first ships being commissioned in 2021–22. By 2025, 3–4 of these will have been completed.Project 28/28A: two Project 28 Kamorta class corvettes are already in service. The remaining two will be commissioned in the next few years (the third corvette is almost ready for sea trials). The delay was caused by the Navy’s decision to significantly upgrade the third and fourth corvettes (composite superstructure, better armaments and sensors). All four will be in commission by 2020.The 28A ships are also due to be built starting 2020, and perhaps 1–2 will be commissioned by 2025.Project 71 IAC (the Vikrant): the Vikrant, India’s first locally built aircraft carrier is almost ready and will be commissioned by 2020 max (not 2023 as reported in the media).Project 75 Scorpenes: the Scorpene submarines are presently in various stages of construction at Mazgaon docks (two are in sea trials with Kalvari, the first sub, ready for commissioning).
