But, as a realist I believe, by 2062 Steve Jobs will be primarily known in the business circles with few of the commoners knowing him.10 years from now, when you ramble about how cool iPhones were in 2006, your son will look at you in the same way you look at your father when he talks about Pan-Am, DEC and bell-bottoms.Sadly, commoners don't remember businessmen. How many common people know about Thomas Watson (of IBM), Robert Johnson (Johnson & Johnson) or John Pemberton (of Coca Cola)? I doubt if many non-Americans know about John D. Rockefeller (once the richest person in the world). In contrast, kings, religious men, revolutionaries and artists are remembered for a long time. I doubt if Shakespeare, Gandhi or Buddha will be forgotten in 1000 years time.The only businessmen who are remembered beyond their time are ones who have left a foundation - such as Rockefeller, Carnegie or Ford or ones who have built institutions named after them. Steve Jobs neither left a big foundation nor has an University named after him.A lot of Jobs popularity is owed to the current state of the media who are predominant users of Apple products. The journalists and opinion makers who loved to use the Mac, iPhone and the iPad wrote large volumes about him. However, 50 years from now the media might be using totally different technologies and might not be so compelled to write about Jobs legacy. Remington typewriters were once hot until it was not.Neither Apple nor Pixar have Jobs' name in the brand. Eponymous organizations make it easier to remember the founders. It is easier to remember JP Morgan, Henry Ford or even Hewlett & Packard than it is to remember Thomas Watson or even Ray Kroc.Given that technology products are more easily adopted by the young rather than the old, there is always a bias for recency. Thus, the current kids might never realize how great Atari once was. Twenty years from now, while you might proudly tell your kids how great iPads and iPhones where, they will only care about their latest gadgets of their time.Finally, it depends on Apple surviving 50 years as a technology leader. Given Apple's current financial health it looks a possibility. However, in consumer technology business, success can be quite ephemeral. IBM was once hot, but now it has exited the PC business. DEC and Compaq were hot, but they got bought/merged. Even in 2004, Microsoft was the unshakable tech goliath, but right now it receives very little mention in tech media. Also, we have seen big companies collapsing in a matter of few years due to various reasons and hence there is a small element of chance. If Apple still remains a leader in 2062 the legacy of Jobs will be greater than if Apple got merged or closed down.As people chase the next coolest toy, the previous ones are sadly thrown to the attic. Think how your own product loyalties changed since early 1990s. Atari, Sony Walkman, Myspace, PS2, Yahoo? People move on sooner than you think.
