Question: What was the risk to Disney if they hadn't fired James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy 3?Outside observation: There doesn’t seem to have been a significant one.Why?Besides people who are in the business or pay attention to the minutae of the filmmaking process no one knows who James Gunn is - It’s a little difficult to believe that an essentially obscure film director’s actions (which were no violations of the law) would matter to filmgoers. Most go to the movies to be entertained and to forget about their real world problems. They rarely allow real world problems to influence their entertainment choices unless, again, those choices are violations of the law.Avengers: Infinity Wars made it certain that Guardians 3 would have been a hit regardless - If Disney had simply ignored the media outcry and kept Gunn onboard, the story would have died down in favor of the anticipation of the third Guardians outing. If the MCU was on shaky ground, then dismissing Gunn would have made strategic and practical sense. It isn’t.Gunn apologize for his actions and deleted the posts - The matter was over until it was dredge up again. If he hadn’t apologized, if he stated that it reflected his current thinking, or had he simply ignored it, then firing him might have been understandable. However, Disney seems to have panicked, dumped Gunn and now have created a situation which it could have easily avoided and which risks the success of the third film (and second sequel) that was going to be a hit regardless.No one really cares - Honestly, beyond a narrow range of people who have decided to use this matter as a football to gain yardage, no on really cares. I have paid to go see both Guardians’ films and I didn’t care about the director and his offscreen life. Since I’m a film aficionado and I work with low budget filmmakers, if I don’t care about the matter, I would have to imagine that the suburban and urban individuals who are going to pay $12–15 per ticket to see the film, couldn’t care less. If telling bad jokes and writing questionable tweets online were a major item, then a staggering number of government officials and entertainers would be drummed out of their respective businesses.The firing was an overreaction which is causing Disney MORE bad publicity than employing Gunn and simply ignoring ro downplaying the issue would have, If the Guardians 3 is a failure, then firing him would definitely be viewed as an overreaction and s short-term business decision.
