Then you pay hundreds of dollars for your firearm. Lying on the 4473 carries a felony charge and punishment of 10 year/$250,000, so you’ll never legally touch a gun again.And that’s before we get into State laws requiring waiting periods, registrations, and permits.Furthermore, you’re confusing cigarettes with alcohol. Only 8 States have statewide ages to buy tobacco that is higher than 18 years. If they have the gun in hand, then they can go to the manufacturer and get where that serial number was sent. There may be wholesalers, but eventually the gun ends up at a retail store. There the dealer should have a 4473 for the first buyer - name, address, etc. They can go to that address and if that person is still there, or they can locate that person (DL number, etc) then they can ask for the gun, or where it is.If that person has disposed of the gun, had it stolen, etc, the trail may end there. If the person traded it at a gun show or at a dealer, then that dealer will have a record in their log books and another 4473 to whom it was sold. The guy has to remember who that dealer was, though! They can track the gun one 4473 at a time until someone can’t remember where it went, or it was stolen.Alternatively I presume they could call FFLs in the area and ask if they have a 4473 for such and such manufacturer/serial…In states where registration is mandatory, they may be able to find the owner that way. Still, if he had it stolen, the trail ends there.I think that the shows ALWAYS find the registered owner, it’s simply an effort at social engineering to get people used to the idea that guns are registered. They hardly all are, only those few states have data, and it is for sure incomplete - I bet every one of those states is missing half the guns from their registry. Either people had them before the registry was enacted and refused to register them, or were brought in as people moved in from out of state and refused to register them, and so on. I’m positive there have been guns sold privately that were not registered, and the new owner similarly refused to register them.
