Why doesn’t Bollywood make movies like Asuran? Is this audience mentality towards realistic movies?

I think realistic movies in Bollywood are being made. We are missing them because they don’t usually get the traction that big movies get.A very quick sample so that we don’t waste time.So Bollywood does make realistic movies. But as you can see, most of them don’t really break records. Even these three movies broke through to other markets like TN, Bengal and AP/TG for them to get better BO results. Now lets talk specifically about Asuran. For starters, Asuran is a masterpiece. It pulled no punches, took very little cinematic liberties and still had the audacity to package itself at breakneck pace almost like a poignant action film. But the biggest thing it did was talk about Caste discrimination. Now in a state like TN this will work since people can take movies that talk about caste realistically.Lets talk about a movie that sent similar waves, though not exactly of the same magnitude in Maharashtra.Sairat spoke about a couple who eloped due to caste differences. The couple is eventually found and brutally murdered. Bollywood decided to take a stab(no pun intended) at this.It was redone by Karan Johar and co. The main problem was Jhanvi Kapoor, obviously. But that aside, the movie tried to casually gloss over the caste narrative from the original and made this a class problem. The age old rich/poor, influential/nobody thingy. The film was lambasted. Most fans from Maharashtra were furious that the soul of the original was taken away by oversimplifying it.Guess what happened at the BO? the film grossed over twice its budget. This despite the budget being almost 10 times that of the MH original. So clearly Karan and Co knew what they were doing. Movies need to make money. Don’t believe what Selvaraghavan tells you.Take me for example. I understand Sairat was a huge hit in MH, but I wouldn’t be caught dead watching a caste-centered love story or one with a tragic ending with no sense of redemption. I would think most viewers like me are equally uncomfortable watching a movie that focusses on caste and caste-based violence. I personally would like to separate entertainment from my political and social views.I watch movies like Asuran and Pariyerum Perumal, because they are superb movies first. Everything else comes later for me. If these movies were not entertaining or well written, I would happily give them a miss. Like I did with Kaala for example. This is the reason why I feel even in Tamil directors like Pa Ranjith are losing traction, while directors like Maari Selvaraj and Vetrimaaran are getting more limelight. In the end, people comes to theatres for entertainment.

What's your opinion of N.K. Jemisin's writing? What sorts of science fiction/fantasy readers are likeliest to find her style and substance congenial?

I had noticed Jemisin in the news because of her winning the Hugo three times consecutively, which seemed pretty impressive.Never having heard of her, I read her wikipedia page, which goes into some detail about her fiery criticism of another SF/fantasy writer I’d never heard of, some alt-right twerp whose name doesn’t deserve repeating.Well, anyone who takes on alt-right twerps is fine by me. I then read the TV tropes page on her work, which made it sound interesting. I am disgustingly ignorant of vast tracts of good literature, but I still hadn’t actually read her writing. So then I read this question, and I downloaded a sample on my Kindle of her novel The Fifth Season. I started to read it, thinking I might just read a page or two and finish it later, but I found the story so compelling, and her narrative voice so entertaining—sly, amused, compassionate, but also cool and measured—that I read the whole sample in one go. If it weren’t for the fact that I just blew my book budget for this month on some Dante, I’d have ordered the book in a heartbeat. Next month, I will.Apparently Bustle has called her ‘the sci-fi writer every woman needs to be reading’. I don’t know about the ‘woman’ part. I’m hooked. Surely, if there’s a really, really good woman sci-fi writer out there, then men in particular ought to be reading her. Because isn’t part of the point of reading to not see everything from your own perspective? As someone who is in the foothills of writing sci-fi/fantasy, it does me good to read someone who really, really knows what she’s doing, and writes beautifully (and can write ugly, if she wants to.) It consoles me, somewhat, for the death of Ursula LeGuin.
