I meant it to be an Article with some philosophical aspects.Battling Physics: The right wayAs I am getting a lot of queries asking me the right way to “battle” physics, I decided to write this post.So, is physics really a battle?Yes and no, it is relative…. If you were always a Science Geek and naturally observant, physics for you will be a Nintendo game not a battle. You will learn it automatically and will master it with practice just like one masters joystick skills at the Nintendo.For others, well, yes! It turns out to be a battle. Physics may win but only after defeating Biology and Chemistry which had already allied :-p Otherwise, physics is generally defeated….So, how can you function as the UN and promote peaceful coexistence and prevent this war? This is what this article is all about…1. Start with the basics: physics in medical entrance exams is always basic and targets the basic. Even if you think you’re eligible for AIIMS and have the audacity to top the exams, target the base first. Physics occupies a niche in your mind, you just have to sow the seed and water it regularly, within a year, it would grow into a Banyan! This very aspect of physics fascinates me. Biology is like the fauna. You read a book, an animal is born in your mind. But in 11-12th, you will just be able to give birth to a single animal for each unit, not two..so you see, it will not be able to have sex and children. With hardwork, you will give rise to a population but it would be constituted by same sex animals. It will die soon and the species would get extinct until you effectuate its rebirth. Hence, you will have to read biology again and again, until you give the exam. Right? Chemistry is in between the two. I will call it Fungi. It can reproduce asexually but will require extensive reading to reproduce sexually. You will understand this aspect within two years. Even if you think you have superhuman capabilities, believe me, you still won’t be a mutant out of the deadpool.For basics, first read the chapter from HC Verma. This should be done before it is taught in your coaching class. Don’t worry if you aren’t able to understand the thing. Do this just to get an overview of the thing. Now, open easy books like Dinesh’s objective Physics. Solve the exercises. Mark those questions that you weren’t able to crack open. Now, go to your coaching class. As you are already versed with the topic, you will find the class intriguing. Search for the answers to the questions you circled and doubts developed from your instructor’s lecture. At this point, I would warn you not to commit the mistake that 99.9% students do— come directly to the lecture without having completed your Pre-lecture work. Now you will find the thing difficult and the adrenaline released in your brain would prevent further development of the concept. This would be an utter waste of the lecture.Now after having enjoyed the lecture, you will have some lose ends to tie back at home. Now go to the next level- start with DC Pandey’s book (medical entrance version). Solve it. Don’t murmur that you have numberless doubts. Just circle those questions. After completing the exercise, climb onto your bed. Now think…keep just a paper and pen with you. Draw the figure of the question you have doubt in and deliberate. The answer will come. Initially, it would seem to be a time waste but after sometime, when you solve them yourselves, you will develop confidence. Congratulations, your banyan has started flourishing itself. This is the best way to study physics. Thinking! Reading lot of material will just crowd the space of your brain with numerous small saplings of banyan. You don’t have to do that. You just have to let that single banyan to grow and spread. Thinking is just like watering its roots. Remember, physics is a single tree with each branch leading to something. Everything in it is different but intimately linked.Checkpoint 1: after having done this, if still you feel that it bumped of your ass and you are not able to solve even 25 questions out of 45. Think it is not your cup of tea and start working on biology and chemistry. If you are able to cross the above threshold, go to the next level.2. Become a champion: Now, survivor you have to take it to the next level. You have to conquer it. Open up BM Sharma. You will find some new concepts there. Read them. Understand them. Don’t look at your teacher to do so. Do it yourself. Solve objective questions given in it. See the solution if you are not able to get into the question. Leave it if you are not able to understand it. It might not even be required. Go to the teacher only if the solution is NOT there. I repeatedly emphasise on the point. Asking too much doubts will kill your creativity and decrease your thinking ability. New questions are often asked in exams where you have to think it yourself. With an open book we are testing understanding rather than memory.When I teach physics for physics majors, the students vastly prefer open book. Physicists are typically good at analytics and poor at memorization. Give them the equations and the constants, and they can compute.When I teach my physics course for non-scientists, “Physics for Future Presidents”, I discovered that few students took the open book option. Students from English, History, Political Science, … are accustomed to memorization, and they don’t consider the small amount needed in physics to be a burden. So they opted for the longer time I generally allow for closed book exams.In many fields both memorization and understanding are useful. In my research, I never attempt to work without referring to books. On the other hand, when giving a seminar or colloquium, you can’t refer to a book when someone asks you a question.

My physics scoreNEET 2018 - 50NEET 2019 - 148Things I did to achieve this -Make a sheet for every chapter which has all the formulas, important numbers, units etc. It should be elaborate enough so that one reading is sufficient for you to revise the whole chapter and you're able to solve questions of every topic.It saved me the hassle of referring to my notes and this way I was sure I covered everything quickly.Books I used - selected questions from Ncert and DC Pandey + question bank of Allen's and Aakash’s modules.Edit - Previous year questions are mustFor physics, you should practice a variety of questions. HC Verma is a great book with seriously challenging questions but I feel it is not necessary for NEET.Never leave calculations or use calculator while practicing questions. Make a habit of doing as many calculations as you can mentally. You'll thank yourself for this during the exam because every second matters.Set goals for the next day, the night before. Continue doing this throughout the year. Ticking them off is the best feeling ever!Give dedicated hours to physics everyday. I used to finish my biology and chemistry work by 5 or 6 pm. Then I gave undivided attention to physics till I slept.Do questions in a limited time frame even while practicing. Try to be more accurate than to focus on solving all questions in that period.Lastly, stick to the basics. You shouldn't forget silly things like SI units, dimensional analysis, conversions. NEET mostly asks questions that are directly formula based and sometimes reasoning based. Don't get caught up in doing extremely difficult problems.If you believe you can do it, you're halfway there. Put in the work and you'll surely see the desired outcome.Thank you for reading!
