What are your top 10 favorite facts for or against gun control?I do not agree with most gun control arguments because I do not agree with the popular premise that everyday gun owners put everyone at risk and that the risk of gun violence is random and evenly distributed. I do not believe removing legally obtained and owned firearms from law-abiding citizens will create a positive effect. In no particular order here are some facts I feel are important in understanding the overall situation.1.) Homicides are not evenly distributed.Arguments for gun control based on the number of homicides are flawed because the majority of homicides in any given state can be isolated to relatively few neighborhoods. There’s a lot of great data analysis in the article, but this comment stood out,Take a look at Ilinois as an example. If you look at Chicago’s homicide rate, it is 18.5/100k population (2016). When you look at the rest of IL that is NOT Chicago, that rate is 1.5/100k population.When gun control advocates suggest it’s because of the weak gun laws in Indiana, what they’re not telling you is that Chicago is not the only portion of IL that shares a border with IN. IL shares borders with many so-called lax gun law neighbors. But it’s only Chicago that has the high rate of firearm murders.This is true for most cities and states. Louisiana is also considered a high homicide state, but most of those homicides are heavily concentrated in the St. Roch neighborhood, Elysian Fields Avenue between Brother Martin High School and I-610 and along Old Gentilly Rd, all in New Orleans.In Wisconsin, most of the state’s homicide is driven by three neighborhoods in Milwaukee – Metcalf Park, Park West and Concordia.Pick a state and it’s almost guaranteed that homicides will be driven by geographically small neighborhoods in one or two cities.Murders in US very concentrated: 54% of US counties in 2014 had zero murders, 2% of counties have 51% of the murders - Crime Prevention Research Cente2.) The vast majority of homicides are not committed by everyday people.We think of homicide as random, committed by everyday people with no criminal background out of rage or as an escalation of conflict, but that isn’t the case,Looking only to official criminal records, data over the past thirty years consistently show that the mythology of murderers as ordinary citizens does not hold true. Studies have found that approximately 75% of murderers have adult criminal records, and that murderers average a prior adult criminal career of six years, including four major adult felony arrests. These studies also found that when the murder occurred "[a]bout 11% of murder arrestees [were] actually on pre-trial release"--that is, they were awaiting trial for another offense."The fact that only 75% of murderers have adult crime records should not be misunderstood as implying that the remaining 25% of murderers are non-criminals. The reason over half of those 25% of murderers don't have adult records is that they are juveniles. Thus, by definition they cannot have an adult criminal record.Gun Control - Gun Homicides3.) Stricter gun control laws do not actually restrict access.Tighter gun control restrictions only work to increase the number of illegally obtained and possessed guns and does not actually reduce access to criminals.In the 13 states with the fewest restrictions on gun ownership, 40 percent of inmates illegally obtained the gun they used, Webster said. Only about 13 percent purchased the gun from a store or pawn shop.In the other 37 states, including New York state, 60 percent of inmates illegally procured the gun they used, Webster said."If you look at the most stringent standards for legal gun ownership, it’s more like 65 percent," Webster said.Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh teamed up with the Pittsburgh Police Department in 2016 to look at almost 900 firearms recovered from crime scenes in 2008. They found the criminals connected to these firearms did not legally possess them in 80 percent of the cases.A study from the University of Chicago looked at 99 inmates at the Cook County Jail in Chicago in 2015. It found only about 3 percent of inmates who used a gun bought it at a gun store. Researchers did not track the share of inmates who purchased a gun legally through other means.Do illegal gun owners commit most gun crime?4.) Criminals get their guns predominately through fraudulent means.While it’s difficult to get good data due to the nature of the crime we do know criminals get the guns used in crimes predominately through straw sales and “rogue” gun dealers that make up less than 1% of all gun dealers. Both use fraudulent means that cannot be controlled with legislation. We know “friends, family, and associates” would not stop supplying criminals with guns because it is more illegal than before, especially considering some of those people are engaged in the criminal enterprise as well. Illegally operating gun dealers make up false records or fail to make records at all, and busting these dealers can make a big difference in illegal gun supply. Some argue the majority of these dealers go into business in order to supply crime guns, just like some gang members join the military for free training. Which method is used the most is constantly in flux and difficult to quantify because it the nature of the data and dealer busts. Stolen guns are rarely used in crimes because they can be traced more easily and are instead sold back into the legal market through pawn shops and less often gun shops.We know that criminals primarily get their guns from corrupt firearm dealers, gangs and social networks, and theft.How Do Criminals Get Illegal Guns?5.) Concealed carry permit holders are the most lawful group of Americans.The effects of concealed carry are often debated, and there are many factors that come into play, but we do have good data on those that actually do the carrying. Some politicians like to use the “blood in the streets” argument against legal concealed carry, but the data doesn’t support these fears,A new study by the Crime Prevention Research Center, Concealed Carry Permit Holders Across the United States: 2016, shows that people who hold a permit to carry a concealed firearm are the most law abiding citizens in the United States – even more law abiding per capita than the police!What’s more, states that allow for concealed carry permits are significantly safer than those that don’t. States like Vermont, that allow for concealed carry without a permit (Constitutional right to carry) are safer even still. As the study states:In 2014, the seven states that allowed concealed carry without a permit had much lower rates of murder and violent crime than did the seven jurisdictions with the lowest percentage of permit holders. Indeed, the murder rate was 31 percent lower in the states not requiring permits. Legal self-defense with a gun happens more than you think.The popular argument against legal self-defense with a gun is that it doesn’t happen. Using only FBI justified homicide data the argument starts off on the wrong foot and fails to account for the majority of self-defense incidents because of the flawed methodology.According to the CDC in 2013 there are between 500,000 and 3,000,000 cases of legal self-defense with a gun in a year. A gun can only be used in legal self-defense to avoid death, rape, or grave bodily harm with the expectation of permanent disfigurement, disability, or death. This figure isn’t exactly news, though, as it fits the range established by multiple independent researchers, the DOJ, the FBI, and even the CDC itself in the mid 1990’s (although the CDC did not release the findings at the time). That means a gun is used to save a life between 50 to 300 times more than take a life in interpersonal violence.The number of legal self-defense cases are much higher than the number of injuries and deaths related to guns. This is because in the vast majority of cases the criminal flees once a firearm is presented and no shots are even fired. The police can be called and apprehend the suspect and everyone remains safe and alive.On an average day in the US 85 people kill someone or themselves with a gun. The same day between 1,370 and 8,220 people are not killed. The advice to not resist a violent criminal may be completely wrong.The common thinking for decades has been to not resist a violent attacker in order to avoid escalating the conflict and being more injured or killed when you otherwise would not have been, especially for women. Research into this thought has shown that advice might hurt people more than help, especially when it comes to guns. The entire linked article is worth a read, but here is a quick summary,During violent crimes most criminals do not have a weapon of any kind. If they do have a gun it most likely will be fake, non-functional, and/or unloaded. If they do have a functional gun the chances of you being hit are slim. If you are hit the chances of you dying from your wound(s) is very rare. Dying from knife wounds is quite rare as well. Individuals resisting with a knife or gun are raped less than 1% of the time, while unarmed resistance is at around 15% at best.Overall 71.4% of victims of violent crime took some type of self-protective measure. Such measures include screaming, running, physically fighting the attacker, and using a weapon, among other things (12). Resisting a crime by using a firearm generally reduces your chance of being hurt or killed, especially for women.Resistance to Violent Crime: What Does the Research Show?8.) Police training is overstated.I appreciate my police department and have taken my niece with some cookies to personally thank our local officers at the police station, but I understand their training in terms of firearms is greatly overstated. Mass Shootings are not a Mental Health Issue.Mental illness is often claimed to be not a contributing factor, but the contributing factor to mass killings. Right under removing privately owned firearms from Americans improving mental health services is a top suggestion. Would that help end mass killings?In an analysis of 235 mass killings, many of which were carried out with firearms, 22 percent of the perpetrators could be considered mentally ill. Checking Facts and Falsehoods About Gun Violence and Mental Illness After Parkland ShootingIf a minority of mass killings the attacker was found to have some sort of mental illness. Why does it seem mental health is such a big deal? We need to understand the motivations of the attackers in order to find any kind of predictable factors. Experts have researched this topic extensively,Although some mass shooters are found to have a history of psychiatric illness, no reliable research has suggested that a majority of perpetrators are primarily influenced by serious mental illness as opposed to, for example, psychological turmoil flowing from other sources. https://psychiatryonline.org/doi...While it would be nice to say “X” group of people or “X” condition necessarily causes these attacks it’s not so simple. The truth is even with the presence of some kind of mental illness that on it’s own is not a motivator to harm others. The motivators for mass killings are incredibly varied and specific to the individual, most people do not know of these motivators as they are no outward signs. We use hindsight to give certain “warning signs” predictive value, but in reality there are so many people that exhibit these signs that will never attempt to harm anyone else they hold no real predictive value.Could improvements to the mental health system and American mindset make a difference in mass killings? Yes, but I do not believe it would be a quick or dramatic change. When a troubled youth comes up against a trial, like the death of a loved one, being able to address the issue in a healthy way would lead to a healthier person and society overall, but that isn’t something that changes (or is funded) in a day, nor is it any kind of guarantee.So what causes an individual to become a mass shooter? We don’t totally know. The FBI has established a strong copy-cat effect ever since Columbine, and comparisons to suicide and serial killers shows the media frenzy may increase these instances, but there is no silver-bullet fix. Other countries have similar kinds of individuals, but they engage in other activities, such as the more than 800 individuals that left the UK to fight for ISIS, half of which returned already. Population adjusted that would mean the US would have 4,000 people that fit the mass shooter profile, comparing only to this one category, but we haven’t had 4,000 mass shootings.There’s more to the story that isn’t here, such as the legal, Constitutional, political, financial, and logistical hurdles for additional gun control and research into the actual effectiveness of such policies. I gave some facts I think are important in understanding the US gun debate. What we find is not that everyday gun owners are contributing to some kind of gun epidemic, instead we find criminals with illegal guns in isolated crime centers are responsible for filling up the vast majority of gun crime stats and everyday gun owners are blamed for it. Meanwhile, everyday gun owners statistically use legally obtained and owned firearms to defend their lives every day at a greater rate than crimes committed with guns.

It might be hard or impossible to to get a concealed carry permit if you live in a van. There is no combination of resident and non resident permits you could get that would cover all 50 states. Now unless you are a resident of California that states out for carry and they dont issue no resident. Mariana Islands.So I guess that combination sortof gives you across the United States, now in each States that honors your permit you have to follow their laws. I sortof doubt you could get a resident permit living in a van though.If you are talking unloaded each state has their own rules and sometimes even that changes in cities and counties. Now as a van does not have a trunk you would have to have an locking cabinet and some states have requirements on the locking cabinets.Course in many states not having a residence address might make legal purchase impossible but Ill assume you either had the firearm when you had an address or purchased it in a state which does not have that requirement. which would make private sales in 41 states your only option. Im sure its less then 41 states but the only two possable ways to legally by a firearm in the United States (yes even gun shows) is from an FFL and cant see you get past the Federal Form 4473 with no address. Online in any state of course can only go to an FFL and private in 9 states has to go through an FFL. So I can only say private sales in 41 states is the only possible where you can without a resident address. Would have to look at each of those 41 states but its probably more like 20.

I would not carry a gun. There are two reasons for this.First, a teacher must maintain control of his class by his personality alone. He is the ruler; he establishes the laws. If students are being bullied, he must put a stop to it. If a teacher cannot control his class, cannot reason with a student or does not recognize a student with mental problems (and get help for the student), he should not be teaching. When a student (or former student) enters a class with a weapon, the teacher has failed.Second, adding another gun in the situation does not improve the situation. Let the police do their jobs. Police don’t teach and teachers should not be shooting. The teacher’s duty in a school shooting situation is to protect the students, not play at being Rambo.Let’s address the elephant in the room. There are too many guns available in the US and there are no laws that are effective in preventing these shootings. (In Wisconsin there is no minimum age for gun hunting and even blind people are granted a license!) The gun lobby is far too powerful buying politicians with their large donations. There are two simple methods for reducing these shooting events while allowing people to continue to own guns:Anyone with any type of violent arrest (fighting, domestic abuse, etc.) is prohibited from buying or owning a gun.Require a fingerprint id in order to activate a gun. The one on my phone activates in milliseconds - require one for every gun. This prevents anyone but the owner from firing the gun (no point in stealing a gun you cannot activate, no more children playing with a gun and shooting a playmate, etc.).
