PDF Editor FAQ

I’ve only been with my cat for a day but I don’t like the cat anymore and I like my dogs way more but can’t return him. What do I do?

BNBR. BNBR. BNBR.Deep breath. If you aren’t willing to accept the responsibility of being the unconditional best friend to a pet, then don’t bring one home in the first place. Here are pictures of my new family members, Bailey and Pepper. When I filled out the adoption papers for these guys, there was a space with a question like “Under what circumstances would you return your cat?” It included things like “they scratch the furniture” or “you don’t like their personality” or “you moved to a new apartment.” I left them all blank. The person from the shelter reviewed my paperwork, and said “oh, you didn’t fill this in.” I told her, “no, I filled it in. I just can’t imagine a situation in which I’ll be returning these kittens.”During day one, I had some idea about what their personalities were like. It seemed to me that Pepper was the braver of the two and would likely be the friendlier. Over the span of a couple of weeks, I’ve come to realize that Bailey is actually the snugglier of the two: it just took him a couple of days to get used to his new environment. Maybe in a month, I’ll have a slightly different understanding of who each of them is.But they are already members of my family.

Why did you choose your dog or cat?

That’s the picture of my cat when he was a kitten and was put up for adoption on the shelter website. The moment I saw this little guy, I knew he was coming home.My husband and I drove right away to the shelter and filled up the adoption papers and brought him home.I can’t really say what it, but I knew this kitty will always be my baby. That’s Ezio, a year old, who loves to look at the birds, play with his string toys and sometimes cuddle with me.

My friend adopted a dog who turned out to be pregnant. The shelter is threatening to take away the puppies claiming them as their ”property” even though they didn’t know she was initially pregnant. Is there anything my friend can do?

I have had first-hand experience with this on more than one occasion from more than one organization, both state, county and regular nonprofits. When you adopt an animal, and that animal is pregnant, you not only own animal, but the puppies, (kittens, goats, horses whatever they happen to be carrying). It is up to the organization to know the gynecological state of every one of its rescues. They have an obligation to spay or neuter any animal that is about to be adopted.Having worked very closely with many Humane Societies, half legitimate rescue organizations and County pounds.... I can tell you why they want the animals back. Each one of those animals will be sold at a profit. The last thing a pound needs is more dogs that may or may not be adopted. However, if it is not a no-kill shelter, they will sell the animals that they can through adoption fees and then euthanize the rest if they are not taken in by a local rescue.I've done thousands of adoption papers through my volunteering at county shelters. You'd be sick to your stomach if you knew how many shelters look forward to the arrival of a new litter…much like slave owners were thrilled to death when a slave woman gave birth (and I mean slavery, worldwide.)The puppies belong to the owner of the dog. That would be you.Animal control or, the Humane Society has absolutely no leg to stand on.Also, they are probably a 501c which means they would be a non-profit.Them ending up in court because they wanted to see these puppies for no viable reason other than selling them is certainly not going to fly in a court and they could very possibly lose their licenses… not to mention the complete ostracization by literally everyone on the internet!Your best course of action would be to call Legal Aid and, your local news media! (Video EVERYTHING but don't be obvious about it.)You would be absolutely astounded at the amount of influence local and social media has, especially during these days of absolute confusion as to what exactly the world is doing! This is something people could focus their rage on…. (Actually, rage is not a fair word. The correct word would be righteous indignation!)Sometimes, rage is a good thing. Rage stops Wars ends injustices and makes people stand up for the things that are right.EDIT: Several people have made the argument that rescues can't make a profit on adoption fees. That is actually correct. So I think the better thing to say would be “the puppies will be sold (in the form of adoption fees) to help recoup some losses” instead of “for profit”.
