When the original claim that Barack Obama was born in Kenya surfaced on the right-wing Free Republic forum in 2008, there was no reason given to believe it. No evidence was cited, not even something from an anonymous source. Loren Collins describes that original post that started the birther movement in his article, “The Secret Origins of Birtherism.”Collins is the author of the book: Bullspotting: Finding Facts in the Age of Misinformation that includes a chapter on “anomalies” and how finding odd things leads to belief in conspiracy theories. The birther movement is primarily built on anomalies.Probably the first real boost to birtherism came from Ron McRae, a street preacher who visited and had contacts in Africa. He managed to set up a transatlantic phone call with Sarah Onyango Obama, Barack Obama’s step grandmother in Kenya. He was trying to get her to say that Obama was born in Kenya, and for a minute it looked like he had succeeded when he got her to say, in translation from the Lou dialect, that she “was ‘present’ when he was born.” The tape recording was widely distributed in its edited form, edited to remove the clarification that followed saying she was present in Kenya when he was born in Hawaii, where her stepson was “marrying.”[1][1][1][1] Apparently Donald Trump was taken in by this edited recording according to statements from Joseph Farah, editor of the tabloid website WorldNetDaily, who counseled Trump to ask leading questions rather than talk about the ambiguous grandmother recording:When you start making assertions and “grandma said,” you start getting yourself in a bind. I’m not sure that’s what grandma said. That’s fuzzy.[2][2][2][2]Farah himself claimed to have “essentially created the [birth certificate theory].”[3][3][3][3] It was Farah’s publication, WorldNetDaily, that put “Where’s the Birth Certificates” billboards across the country, and published Jerome Corsi’s book, Where’s the Birth Certificate? and later Where’s the Real Birth Certificate?The sign is real. It appears brighter than the surroundings because it is a lighted LED sign.As birtherism grew, a number of birthers imagined that they could look at images under high magnification and spot anomalies that they claimed proved the birth certificate Obama released in 2008 was a fake. One of them under the pseudonym TechDude stole the credentials from someone else. The other pseudonymous “expert” Ron Polarik had no credentials.In addition to the far right, there were some Hillary Clinton supporters who also questioned Obama’s birthplace, but when one of them found the first of two Honolulu newspaper announcements of Obama’s birth, that branch of birthers fizzled.Obama released his second birth certificate in 2011 ostensibly to put the issue to rest, but that didn’t happen. The second certificate, released as a PDF file created by a high-end Xerox WorkCentre 7655 office machine, had all manner of advanced compression techniques that the untrained self-appointed forensic birther document analysts thought were marks of forgery. Denying the second birth certificate turned into a cottage industry. All told there were 212 lawsuits filed trying to disqualify Obama as president in one way or another.[4][4][4][4]That was when Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County Arizona got into the picture; responding to a local TEA Party group, Arpaio assigned his volunteer “Cold Case Posse,” headed by Mike Zullo, to investigate the birth certificate. Zullo went on for years producing bogus reports, and being a frequent guest on a Florida preacher’s radio show promoting his investigation and birther conspiracy theories. (Arpaio ended up an unscheduled speaker at the 2016 Republican National Convention and Trump would later pardon him for a criminal contempt of court conviction related to related to a racial profiling case.)If one looks at all the misstatements, anomalies and quirks that birthers accumulated over 8 years (one cannot fault them for their industry), one might wonder if something nefarious were going on about Obama’s birth circumstances, but all of that falls apart under individual scrutiny, and the evidence that Obama was born in Hawaii is solid and irrefutable. The proof was the 2008 birth certificate, the official statement from the Hawaii Health Director, the newspaper announcements (2), three certified verifications from the state to the states of Arizona and Kansas, and one to a federal court in Mississippi, the Hawaii state birth index for 1961 and of course his long form birth certificate, handled and photographed by the press.For more information, consult the State of Hawaii’s Obama FAQ and my Debunker’s Guide to Obama Conspiracy Theories. In Florida you must provide a proof of identity, such as birth certificate. But the one thing they won’t accept to renew your drivers license is YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE. You can use a current drivers license to open a bank account, cash a check, buy a car, or really anything else in Florida that requires an ID. But the State of Florida doesn’t consider the drivers license the state issues a valid ID to renew that same drivers license.You also have to provide 2 documents to prove residency, such as rental agreement, insurance policy, bank statement. Fine and good if you are the one paying the bills or keep a bank account. If you are living with someone else who does all that, you can’t prove you’re a resident to the state’s satisfaction. And guess who are most likely to be living under someone else’s roof or not having credit or a bank account? Poor people.
