PDF Editor FAQ

If you could choose any 15 people in history to make a Major League Baseball team, who would you choose?

I am going to make a roster that considers steroid and other PED users. I am sure other commenters can provide a team that is free of steroid users.1. LF. Barry Bonds - This is a rather simple decision for my leadoff hitter. Among the players I chose for my lineup, Barry Bonds is 2nd on the team in BB%, and leads the team in stolen bases. That combination of speed, on-base skills, and of course legendary power makes my team a threat to score as soon as the game begins. Bonds gets the nod in LF because he was an above average defensive player in his career. He hit 298/444/607 with a 162 game average of 41 home runs, 28 stolen bases, and 139 walks.2. RF. Babe Ruth - Studies suggest your best overall hitter should bat second. That is why I am batting Babe Ruth here. Relative to era, Babe Ruth is the most dominant baseball player in Major League history. While he is not a particularly great defensive player or base runner, the fact that he hit 342/474/690 and a 162 game average of 46 home runs and 133 walks makes this a very easy choice.3. 1B, Lou Gehrig - This is the first difficult choice I had to make. This is where your second best hitter should be slotted, but I do not think Lou Gehrig is my second best hitter. So why am I batting him 3rd over Ted Williams? Splits. My first three batters are all left handed. Lou Gehrig was much more successful against lefties than Williams was. In fact, Gehrig’s offensive numbers against lefties were better than Willie Mays’ and he’s a right handed hitter. While he wasn’t a great defender, I’m not looking for defense at 1st base. For his career, Gehrig hit 340/447/632 and he had a 162 game average of 37 home runs, 40 doubles, and 113 walks.4. 2B, Rogers Hornsby - My first right handed batter, Rogers Hornsby is in fact arguably the greatest right handed hitter in ML history relative to era. He was the closest thing that the NL had to Babe Ruth at the time, leading the NL in OPS an incredible 10 times in 12 seasons. While he is perhaps the worst power hitter on my roster, he still proved he could swing for power, hitting 301 career home runs and leading the league twice, including a career high 42 home runs. Defensively, he was considered an excellent player at second base, making him an easy choice for the position. For his career, he hit 358/434/577 and had a 162 game average of 210 hits, 22 home runs, and 39 doubles.5. DH, Ted Williams - Although I believe he is a slightly better overall hitter than Gehrig, I explained above why I ordered the lineup this way. Ted Williams was my second choice for leadoff hitter because he’s the greatest at getting on-base in major league history. However, he lacks the speed and base running ability that Bonds did, which is why I put him lower in the lineup. Williams is also probably the worst defensive player on the team, and with a legitimately good defender already on the team, putting Williams in as the DH was an easy choice. Williams hit 344/482/634 and had a 162 game average of 37 home runs and doubles, and 143 walks.6. CF. Willie Mays - While Mays never had seasons as dominant as the guys above him, it was his consistency in every facet of the the game over a long period of time that make him my choice as CF. Obviously, he was a wizard defensively, and nearly became the first 40–40 player in history. Offensively, his best skill is power, as he hit 660 career home runs, including breaking the 50 home run mark in two different seasons. Mays hit 302/384/557 and had a 162 game average of 36 home runs and 18 stolen bases.7. 3B. Mike Schmidt - A classic example of SABR baseball strategy, Mike Schmidt usually did three things on offense. Hit a home run, strikeout, or draw a walk. He lead the league in home runs 8 times, and walks 4 times. Good enough to legitimately be called the greatest offensive third baseman in ML history. On top of that, he was a legendary defender at the hot corner. For a 7 hitter, I’ll take a guy who gets on base, hits for power, and plays excellent defense. For his career, he hit 267/380/527 and had a 162 game average of 37 home runs and 102 walks.8. SS. Alex Rodriguez - Easily the best modern day shortstop, the reason I am fine with leaving Rodriguez at this position is because he actually logged more innings and games played at the position than he did at third base, and he was actually a good defensive shortstop (his best defensive years were at the position). I also chose Rodriguez over Honus Wagner because I am trying to stay out of the dead ball era as much as possible. Much like Mays, Rodriguez gives me a great all-around game, although I think Mays was the better overall hitter, which is why I have him 7 and Rodriguez 8. Still, Rodriguez put up some great numbers in his career, including three seasons of at least 50 home runs. Rodriguez hit 295/380/550, and had a 162 game average of 41 home runs and 19 stolen bases.9. C. Johnny Bench - Finally, I am left with my nine spot, and my catcher. Bench is pretty clearly the best catcher in Major League history. I’m sure some will bring up Josh Gibson, but my team is strictly Major League players. While he isn’t the greatest hitter ever, he’s one of the best, and while he’s not the best defensive catcher, he’s also one of the best. Nobody at the position in history has combined offense and defense at catcher better than Bench. His highlights include incredible post seasons performances, a revolutionary defensive style, and power never before seen at the catcher position—he is one of 4 catchers in ML history to have hit 40 or more home runs, and still holds the record at the position with 45. For his career, Bench hit 267/342/476 and had a 162 game average of 29 home runs and doubles.So there you have it. That’s my lineup. Now, let’s move onto the pitching staff…1. SP. Roger Clemens – Roger Clemens is probably the greatest combination of dominating pitching and durability the modern game has ever seen. Going by fWAR, Clemens rates as the greatest pitcher of all-time, barely beating out Cy Young by 2.2 WAR despite pitching nearly 2,500 fewer innings than Young. He lead the league in ERA 7 times, including a 1.87 ERA over 211 innings as a 42 year old. Clemens had a 143 ERA+, a 1.173 WHIP, and 8.6 K/9.2. SP. Randy Johnson - Randy Johnson is very likely the greatest left handed pitcher in the history of the game. Although he never quite dominated to the level Clemens did, Johnson did put together a history four year run where he won the Cy Young award every single year. Johnson is also the greatest strikeout artist by K/9, and is second on the all-time strikeout list. Johnson posted a 135 ERA+, 1.171 WHIP, and 10.6 K/9.3. SP. Greg Maddux - In an era dominated by home runs and strikeouts, Maddux quietly became the greatest finesse pitcher in the modern era. Known for a relatively slow fastball, Maddux relied on pinpoint accuracy to get out of trouble, despite only a 6.1 career K/9. His 1994 and 1995 are considered among the greatest campaigns ever, and he boasts one of the most dominant peaks in major league history. Maddux posted a 132 ERA+, 1.143 WHIP, and 1.8 BB/9.4. SP. Pedro Martinez - While he was often considered too small, that never bothered Pedro, and he became arguably the most dominant pitcher of the late 90’s and early 2000’s, and perhaps on this team. His 2000 campaign is widely considered one of the most dominant performances in Major League history, comparable to Bob Gibson’s legendary 1968 season. For some perspective, his 1.74 ERA was so much better than everyone else’s, that second place Roger Clemens was all the way down at a 3.70 ERA. Imagine a season where the best pitcher is about two full runs better per 9 innings than the next best pitcher? The only knock against Pedro is durability, but his dominance makes him impossible to pass up. And remember, 2000 was at the height of the steroid era. Martinez posted a 154 ERA+, 1.054 WHIP, and averaged 10.0 K/95. SP. Tom Seaver - This was a difficult choice, but I ultimately went with Seaver for several reasons. One, his durability was great, two, he had a very good peak, and three, he’s a lot more modern than most of the pitchers I was considering here. Over a seven year stretch, he lead the NL in strikeouts 5 times, while leading the NL in ERA 3 times. He too has a very dominant season he can point to, 1971, where he posted 289 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.76. For his career, Seaver had a 127 ERA+, 1.121 WHIP, and 250 innings pitched per 162 game season.CP. Mariano Rivera - Finally, another easy one. To me, the second best reliever of all-time is Billy Wagner, and he’s not even close to Mariano Rivera’s level. He dominated in the playoffs over 141 playoff innings, and only allowed 11 earned runs—good for 0.70 ERA. While saves are a nonsense stat, he is the all-time leader, not to mention, he’s the all-time leader in games finished and in ERA+. He had a 205 ERA+ and 1.000 WHIP over 1283 IP.Well, there you have it. That would be my team if I had to choose 15 players to create a roster.

It's very commonly said that Eddie Murray is the second best switch hitter - likely because he compiled 500 homers and 3000 hits - but it seems like the sabermetrics are in favor of Chipper Jones. Is Chipper a better hitter than Murray?

I have the greatest respect for Eddie Murray’s accomplishments. However, over the entirety of his career, Chipper was a better hitter and a better all-around player than Murray, and it’s not even close.WAR isn’t a good way to compare hitters, because it contains a defensive component and Murray played 584 games and took 2411 more PA as a DH.Eddie Murray’s stats come from Eddie Murray Career Batting Splits | Baseball-Reference.com and Eddie Murray - Stats - Batting on Fangraphs.Chipper Jones’ numbers come from Chipper Jones Career Batting Splits | Baseball-Reference.com and Chipper Jones - Stats - Batting on Fangraphs.You ask who was the best hitter, that means we look at traditional stat line, plus weighted on-base average (wOBA) to consider how well he did for the team and weighted runs created plus (wRC+) to look at individual production. Counting stats aren’t a good gauge because Murray played 527 more games and had 2,203 more PA than JonesIn an average 162 game season, Chipper produced a better tradition stat line, a higher ops+, higher wOBA and wRC+.When you look at performance with runners in scoring position (RISP), late and close, and situations that can turn a game (leverage) situations, Jones always produced a higher stat line.To compare the performance of switch-hitters, looking at how they do from each side of the plate is important in gauging effectiveness. Most switch-hitters favor one side, usually their dominant hand.Chipper was hit equally well from both sides of the plate, but showed more power from the left side because he swung from the left side more often, even though he was a natural right-handed hitter.Murray was also stronger from his natural left side, but saw a significant drop off when switching to the right side.

How can you find a person by their driver's license number?

A number of states encode your name and date of birth in your license number. These include Maryland, Michigan, and Minnesota (prior to December 13, 2004 only). These states use the same system of encoding, or very similar ones. Given someone's driver's license number from one of these states, you can take good guesses at someone's name and exactly determine day of birth (but not year). With someone's name and date of birth you can guess some or all of their driver's license number.A typical license would look like this:S530-429-085-151 LLLL-FFF-MMM-BBB The above is for John Bennett Smith, born on February 27th.LLLL - Last Name, Soundex CodedLLLL is the Soundex coded last name. Soundex attempts to code similar sounding names to the same four character code. See my Soundex page for details on how to encode it.FFF - First Name, CodedFFF is the encoded first name. Simple add one to the final group of digits until you find an unused entry. If you reach a number allocated to a different date, instead subtract one until you find an unused entry. I don't know what is down if while moving down you hit a number allocated to another date or when you generate a number over 999 or below 001.January (001)01 => 002 02 => 007 03 => 010 04 => 012 05 => 017 06 => 020 07 => 022 08 => 025 09 => 027 10 => 030 11 => 032 12 => 035 13 => 037 14 => 040 15 => 042 16 => 045 17 => 047 18 => 050 19 => 052 20 => 055 21 => 057 22 => 060 23 => 062 24 => 065 25 => 067 26 => 070 27 => 072 28 => 075 29 => 077 30 => 080 31 => 082 February (085)01 => 086 02 => 088 03 => 091 04 => 093 05 => 096 06 => 098 07 => 101 08 => 103 09 => 106 10 => 108 11 => 111 12 => 113 13 => 116 14 => 118 15 => 121 16 => 123 17 => 126 18 => 128 19 => 131 20 => 133 21 => 136 22 => 138 23 => 141 24 => 143 25 => 146 26 => 148 27 => 151 28 => 153 29 => 156 March (158)01 => 159 02 => 162 03 => 164 04 => 167 05 => 169 06 => 172 07 => 174 08 => 177  09 => 182 10 => 184 11 => 187 12 => 189 13 => 192 14 => 194 15 => 197 16 => 199 17 => 202 18 => 204 19 => 207  20 => 227 21 => 229 22 => 232 23 => 234 24 => 237 25 => 239 26 => 242 27 => 244 28 => 247 29 => 249 30 => 252 31 => 254 April (257)01 => 258 02 => 260 03 => 263 04 => 265 05 => 268 06 => 270 07 => 273 08 => 275 09 => 278 10 => 280 11 => 283 12 => 285 13 => 288 14 => 290 15 => 293 16 => 295 17 => 298 18 => 300 19 => 303 20 => 305 21 => 308 22 => 310 23 => 313 24 => 315 25 => 318 26 => 320 27 => 323 28 => 325 29 => 328 30 => 330 May (333)01 => 334 02 => 336 03 => 339 04 => 341 05 => 344 06 => 346 07 => 349 08 => 351 09 => 354 10 => 356 11 => 359 12 => 361 13 => 364 14 => 366 15 => 369 16 => 371 17 => 374 18 => 376 19 => 379 20 => 381 21 => 384 22 => 386 23 => 389 24 => 391 25 => 394 26 => 396 27 => 399 28 => 401 29 => 404 30 => 406 31 => 409 June (411)01 => 412 02 => 415 03 => 417 04 => 420 05 => 422 06 => 425 07 => 427 08 => 430 09 => 432 10 => 435 11 => 437 12 => 440 13 => 442 14 => 445 15 => 447 16 => 450 17 => 452 18 => 467 19 => 470 20 => 472 21 => 475 22 => 477 23 => 480 24 => 482 25 => 497 26 => 500 27 => 502 28 => 505 29 => 507  30 => 517 July (520)01 => 521 02 => 523 03 => 526 04 => 528 05 => 534 06 => 537 07 => 539 08 => 542 09 => 544 10 => 547 11 => 549 12 => 552 13 => 554 14 => 557 15 => 559 16 => 562 17 => 564 18 => 567 19 => 569 20 => 572 21 => 574 22 => 577 23 => 579 24 => 582 25 => 584 26 => 587 27 => 589 28 => 592 29 => 594 30 => 597 31 => 599 August (602) 01 => 603 02 => 605 03 => 608 04 => 610 05 => 613 06 => 615 07 => 618 08 => 620 09 => 623 10 => 625 11 => 628 12 => 630 13 => 633 14 => 635 15 => 638 16 => 640 17 => 643 18 => 645 19 => 648 20 => 650 21 => 653 22 => 655 23 => 658 24 => 660 25 => 663 26 => 665 27 => 668 28 => 670 29 => 673 30 => 675 31 => 678 September (680)01 => 681 02 => 684 03 => 686 04 => 689 05 => 691 06 => 694 07 => 696 08 => 699 09 => 701 10 => 704 11 => 706 12 => 709 13 => 711 14 => 714 15 => 716 16 => 719 17 => 721 18 => 724 19 => 726 20 => 729 21 => 731 22 => 734 23 => 736 24 => 739 25 => 741 26 => 744 27 => 746 28 => 749 29 => 751 30 => 754 October (756)01 => 757 02 => 760 03 => 762 04 => 765 05 => 767 06 => 770 07 => 772 08 => 775 09 => 777 10 => 780 11 => 782 12 => 785 13 => 787 14 => 790 15 => 792 16 => 797 17 => 800 18 => 802 19 => 807 20 => 810 21 => 812 22 => 815 23 => 817 24 => 820 25 => 822 26 => 825 27 => 827 28 => 830 29 => 832 30 => 835 31 => 837 November (840)01 => 841 02 => 843 03 => 846 04 => 848 05 => 851 06 => 853 07 => 856 08 => 858 09 => 861 10 => 863 11 => 866 12 => 868 13 => 871 14 => 873 15 => 876 16 => 878 17 => 881 18 => 883 19 => 886 20 => 888 21 => 891 22 => 893 23 => 896 24 => 898 25 => 901 26 => 903 27 => 906 28 => 908 29 => 911 30 => 913 December (916)01 => 917 02 => 919 03 => 922 04 => 924 05 => 927 06 => 929 07 => 932 08 => 934 09 => 937 10 => 939 11 => 942 12 => 944 13 => 947 14 => 949 15 => 952 16 => 954 17 => 957 18 => 959 19 => 962 20 => 964 21 => 967 22 => 969 23 => 972 24 => 974 25 => 977 26 => 983 27 => 985 28 => 990 29 => 993 30 => 995 31 => 998 Thanks to Joseph Gallian for providing me with the information on which this is based.
