I was quite impressed that the state of Florida Man can add “mail-in voting” to the list of things it does well! There’s only one other thing Florida does well and that’s keeping the electricity on through a hurricane. So two things! Good job, Florida!I relocated back to my home state in 2018 to look after my 90-year-old father. I got a Florida driver’s license, filed a Declaration of Domicile with the county, and registered to vote. I also filled out a form for the state of Illinois Department of Revenue to let them know I had departed.As we are both registered to vote, my father and I each received applications in the mail to request mail-in ballots. We filled them out and sent them in! We got the first mail-in ballots for the primaries and I was already impressed! The ballot itself was barcoded, nicely laid out, and easy to understand. It was clear where you needed to sign and the envelope had a full-size flap that folded over completely and sealed with adhesive strips.The best thing about the mail-in ballots was the online status! I could go online and see when the ballot was sent to me so I’d know to expect it, when they had received it after I turned it in, and when it was counted. I LOVED THAT! I realized that all the years I’d been voting in person and inserting a punch card into a machine, I had never gotten any real confirmation that my vote had been counted!I used a dropbox at an early voting polling place near my home. Online, I saw my ballot had been updated as Received on the same day I’d dropped it off and Counted a few days later. I used the same dropbox for the general election. I saw my ballot updated as Received after a couple days and Counted just a couple days more after that. I have to give the state of Florida a lot of credit for counting mail-in ballots as they were received!I thought there was a good chance Florida could flip back to Blue this election as there are actually more registered Democrats than Republicans but there are a few million Florida voters registered as “No Party Affiliation” and they likely are responsible for the result. I will note, however, that Pinellas has a reputation for being the state’s bellwether county for voting with the election winner. Pinellas flipped Blue after having broken with its larger neighbor to the east in 2016 and voting red while Hillsborough county went for Clinton.My dad and I are signed up for mail-in ballots through the mid-terms of 2022, after which I assume we will have to opt-in again. That seems like an excellent approach. After all, my father is 90 and he may not be around to vote again in 2022.By the way, this is interesting. Only a name, birth date, and county of residence are necessary to look up a person’s voter registration. So that means you can see how a certain resident of Palm Beach county voted.There is a form you can fill out to keep your voting status private. I’m surprised no one’s thought to do that for him.This idiot guy posted on Quora that I had voted in Chicago. How he thought he knew that, I do not know. He’s never even figured out my name and misspells it every time he whines about me.BUT he was wrong. My voter registration status in Chicago is INACTIVE. And of course, I’m not at that address. Compared with Florida, Illinois requires more information than just name and birthdate to look up voter registration status.
