Dd Form 890: Fill & Download for Free

I have wondered the same for some years, till I went through a buying process and felt first hand what could be typical TATA Motors service.Don't get me wrong here. Just to prove I did not enter with a biased mindset, let me go through some history. And I still believe TATA (and MM) make very competent cars. My Dad bought a MM Scorpio in 2004, it has run roughly 250,000kms and still runs beautifully. We bought an Tata Indica V2 in 2005, which has by now run 130,000kms. The Tata always had some trouble related to its electrical system or the fuel pump system. But with fairly good service (mostly by Focuz motors and Hyson motors) we have managed that car.At the time of purchase of both these cars, I was away from home for my studies and do not have much idea about the process. I remember my Dad mentioning Koyenco motors from Cochin messing some stuff up, us having to fight with them to get the extended warranty put in (for which we had paid already etc.).We have had a very positive response from MM. TVS does fairly good job of maintaining the car, and it was super convenient to have a shop only 2kms from home.So when it came to purchasing car in 2013, I was open to buying TATA or MM.After looking around for quite a bit, we zeroed in on a Manza Ex. The other cars considered were: 1. Hyundai i20, Verna (expensive) 2. Suzuki Ertiga (expensive again), Swift (cramped!). 3. Toyota Etios (why did I leave it out?)I have always asked people to look at how much Tata Motors have come forward as a company in the past decade. Though they share the same Indica name, the V2 and Vista (and hence the Manza) are very different cars. With Manza Tata have finally managed to hit the Ambassador sweet spot they have always aimed for. Its super comfortable, the ride though a bit soft and boucy on some roads wont let you know of even large pot-holes.Another key bit in this story is that my brother (who btw dealt with both past car purchases) was also planning to buy a car. In spite of me mentioning the Manza, he just blew it off and never bothered to enter a TATA showroom. MM did not have a car he was interested in. He finally bought a Suzuki SX4. Both cars were delivered on the same day, so it is only natural for me to compare the purchase experiences.Another past experience for me is in buying a Toyota. I had owned a Scion TC for 5 years and looking back had what could be the definition of customer service. Its just that you dont know when you have a good thing going. Absolutely had no trouble. I even went back there to see if I could buy a FJ Cruiser. Toyota gave absolutely free 3 services and the dealer added its own 2. I took the car for service every 6 months and they stuck by their promises.The Tata was bought from Marina motors, Calicut and the SX4 from Indus in Kanjirappally. The initial interactions with the tata dealer were really good. As we went in, there were atleast 10 people there to welcome us. But looking back, I have to wonder why they need so many people.Trouble 1: Tata have trained a person for only one car. So if I wanted to cross-check cars, a new person came into the picture. I was looking at 2 cars - Vista D90 and the Manza. I was talking to 2 different persons from the same dealership.Trouble 2: This person you talk initially would be an understudy, while the BOSS would be sitting across the hall and observing. The kid does not know (or pretends he does not know) the maximum available discounts or the precise price for which the dealership can give you the car.I went into the dealership on March 14th or 15th, 2013. The dealership people were patient to market the product for me. They were more than willing to let me test drive the Manza and the D90. And they quoted a price, (inclusive of an exchange bonus, which I later decided not to use). They had a 2012 Manza in stock and hence I was interested.Trouble 3: The subtle pressure tactics. I had made no commitment or even intention of commitment at the dealership. But the next day the kid shows up in a Manza EXL at my home. I made it very clear that the price they quoted is not going to make me buy the car. So the kid informs me that is the maximum discount he can give, and if I pay Rs. 1000/- he can work with BOSS to give more discounts. At this point I tell him the amount I have in mind and come back to me when he can match it.They stuck with their price for one more day, when I outright rejected their offer and said good-bye. It has to be mentioned at this point that we were purchasing an Indica EV2 also with it. And hence were dealing with multiple people from the dealer. So the next day, the EV2 people came and closed the deal, they offered a good price, we agreed. (This was March 18th). The next day, the kid called again and quoted a reduced price. And I agreed. So he asked for and I paid an advance of Rs. 16,000/- around March 19th. The kid asked for a date we could give a check, we agreed on March 28th. We also had an verbal agreement that the dealership would give the car on March 30th. The commitment form had the following:1. Ex-showroom price: 8,20, 8902. Insurance amount: 291693. Registration amount - The dealership promising that they would take care of the car registration procedure. : 30004. Extended warranty - 6490/-5. Taxes amount. - 657716. The discount they gave (including exchange, which I later said no to). - 30,000/-Totaling: 895320.The price the dealer quoted was less that the commitment form at 888830.Reality check 1: On March 28th the DD from the bank was ready and I called the dealer. It was 230 and the kid was like, even if I take it to bank, I wont be able to anything today. The amount has to come to the company account and only then I can proceed. This was false.On March 29th, we went to the dealership and gave the DD. In spite of knowing we would be coming there, they had not made a receipt. 29th was a holiday being Good Friday. We still gave the DD without any receipt from the dealer. The BOSS and the underling assures us that the vehicle would be registered and given to us on 30th. I also realized that after taking the Rs. 16000 as advance the dealer did absolutely nothing for one week.The significance of this was that April 1st would be the next financial year in India and new tax rates would come into effect.Reality check 2: Saturday 30th: Morning the kid calls and let us know there is NO form 20. He blames the bank for not keeping it with the paper work. I ask him if he has it. He comes with it around 1030 gets signature on it and goes back. His claim was again false. Form 20 is to be taken by the dealer by providing a copy of the receipt of DD to the bank. The Manager should not have signed the form since the kid did not produce the receipt. The dealer informs me that day that they can do only temporary registration that day and permanent registration can be done only on a later date. At 1pm the dealer calls and let us know that the RTO stopped registrations for the day and they cannot deliver the car on 30th.April 1st: The BOSS smarting from failed delivery on the 30th, retorts: Oh you gave DD only on the 29th. (Are you in customer service BOSS)?Why couldnt they do the temporary registration? Answer - Oh the company cannot take a risk of having a temporary registered car. I asked him then what for did he take an advance from me? Would they have given the money back if I cancelled the order? - NO answer.I was let known that the car would be ready for delivery at 430PM. We arrived around 445PM and waited till 700PM. It was dark by the time they pulled in the car for delivery. The picture was taken when there was power. As we were walking to the car the power went off. The dealer mentioned it is a timed automated power-save cut at 7PM. Note the second picture is darker.Reality check 3: The low fuel: The dealer gave a car with enough fuel to go the nearest pump. Really TATA? I buy a car for Rs. 9lakh and this is what you come up with. One key: TATA gives only one remote enabled key! How much can you save there? The kid mentions, OH they do this for the Storme also. Really!Reality check 4: The morning after: A big scratch on the car!Notice how they have painted over it! By this time I have completely lost it. The dealer feigns ignorance about it (really?), promises to clear it. Tells me the complaint has been registered and this would be taken care of. I gather myself and patiently agrees to it.Reality check 5: The registration process: At the time of the delivery, the dealer promised to take the car for registration. (Go here for Kerala temporary registration rules and note it is for one week. Vehicle Registration). 2-3 days go by and no news of the dealer. I call them, nag them into coming. So one day the kid appears early morning with a check for Rs. 55,000/- and hands it over to me. So I call the BOSS and ask what this is. Then he mentions, Oh the dealer usually do not do permanent registration. It is done by the owner. Really! We flat out refused that line of argument and insisted on the dealer to stick by his promises.Side story: I had fitted accessories worth around Rs. 19000/- and hence the difference in tax rate and the amount the dealer put on the check.So anyway after 2 weeks, the kid took the car to nearby RTO and had the car registered permanently. Now the reason for the delay (atleast what I understood that day, this understanding evolves though) - the dealership wanted me to pay the balance amount on the accessories bought. Really! you couldnt tell me this on April 1st? You had to wait 2 weeks for this?The DD receipt: On April 18th, we went to the dealership and obtained the receipt for the DD. And the original invoice.Reality Check 6: Missing stuff: Even after wasting more than 2 hours at the dealership on April 1st, no one at the dealership bothered to brief us on the delivery checklist. I still have the unmarked, unsigned checklist, given by the dealership at the time of delivery. On April 20th I had to travel to Trivandrum. On way back by the time I reached Kollam, the car had clocked 1450kms and TATA recommends a first service by 1500kms. So I took the car into Focuz motors. They asked for the free service coupon which was missing.I called the dealer and asked him to inquire about this and let me know. He agrees. This was around 230PM. I made 3 calls between then and 430PM and all the time the calls were cut by the dealer. Focuz guys mentioned they need only an email with a free coupon. So I messaged Marina Calicut to send the same. The message went around 330PM. I went back to Focuz to collect the car around 520PM. (Focuz closes at 530PM). Luckily at that time, someone called about the EV2 from Marina and then this issue was mentioned to him. Finally Marina guys calls Focuz at 539PM. By then Focuz has billed me, closed their account for the day. I had also decided NOT to make use of the free coupon and I paid for the first service.On this day a complaint was registered with TATA motors. But so far nothing has happened from their end, naturally making them also responsible. Two weeks have gone by as I write this and I still havent got my coupons for next services.What Focuz mentioned: The instruction manual is from an old Manza. The service kms have been modified by TATA when they introduced the club class models in October of 2012, which is not reflected in that manual.Suspicious behavior and what I suspect: Considering that I had mentioned I would be going to Focuz for first service to Marina people, it stuck me odd that Marina people would be cutting my calls. Last week, I re-did my math and what I found was that:895320 - 6490 = 888830!So in effect, they cut the extended warranty and told me they would give the car for the reduced cost, hiding the fact that they have taken away the extended warranty of my car. So April 28th, I called the BOSS and inquired about the same and he was like - oh you need to pay for that. So I mentioned this was something they had promised. Another promise to look into the matter and nothing till now.What remains: Manza Ex comes with a built in GPS and the maps for it is still missing. The dealer says TATA does not trust the dealer and mails it to either the dealer or the customer once the car is sold. They wont be honoring their scratch rectification promise and I dont intend to take the car there. And I dont expect anything more from TATA motors either since sometime has gone by without any response.The Maruti Suzuki (Indus Motors) experience: What was promised and more was delivered by the dealer. First off, a great deal was given on the new SX4. He managed the no-claim-bonus (NCB) insurance on the exchanged car. He drove down the car all the way from kanjirapally to Kollam (~3hrs) and got the car registered himself!The NCB experience with Marina: We exchanged an existing car to buy the EV2. On March 18th, during my iteraction with the BOSS, we asked for NCB. He feigned ignorance and told, you can take full insurance now and claim NCB next year. Note that NCB would save you roughly 50% of insurance cost. But upon convincing, promised to take care of it. EV2 was delivered on April 18th. On 17th they mentioned they cannot do the NCB. But an underling came home, went to the insurance office and the manager wanted originals of existing car insurance to transfer the NCB.Finding humor in a tense situation:The person who had the old car had gone to Tirupati for a week. But really! what were they doing on it for a month?So we had to take the full insurance and take delivery of the ev2. 2 weeks since and nothing has been taken care of that. Some money has to be refunded, even that is missing. Calls are being cut.What can TATA do?: Look at what Maruti and Hyundai have done. They have multiple dealerships in any given city (atleast in Kerala). Competition!What has FIAT done?: FIAT having broken ties with TATA had actually retained some of the dealerships. (or atleast in some places has changed names). In Kerala, Mohandas motors Trivandrum and Hyson Motors Trichur have been retained. Marina was NOT retained as a dealer and instead they have gone different paths in Calicut. Clue?Do I feel cheated - YesWill I go to a TATA showroom again - NO.Is the car a good deal - at 888830, a fully loaded Manza is still a good deal. The car is good. Hopefully I can manage the TASS.What is the lesson TATA can learn - customer retention by TATA is low. My Dad and brother would not walk into a TATA showroom again, and me too after all this. And that is not a good sign for any car maker.What did I learn: I'm still bad at math! Damn it!Add1:End story on NCB: So apparently they cannot do anything about this year. That is a straight Rs. 7000/- loss for us. That is so frustrating, someone's procrastination and irresponsibility costing you money. They provided the old cars original insurance. So NCB for next year will be processed by us.Add 2: 22/6/13Some events in this drama later on has shown a very tough working environment for these guys. e.g. The car that was given with a scratch. The employees dont report it because then they are fined by the company (not sure if this is TATA or the dealer).
