PDF Editor FAQ

How many milliseconds can a human remain alive exposed to the vacuum of space?

Oh, again so many misconceptions and myths.TL:DR: consciousness lost in 8-15 seconds. Death after 1 to 3 minutesSuccessful specialized CPR resuscitation after up to 5 minutes (estimated, no tests ).Details: cold is your very last concern. You will NOT freeze instantly. You will not explode, only have very bad swelling. But in case of rapid or explosive decompression DO NOT hold your breath. Keep your respiratory tract clear and as open is possible to let the air exit easily from lungs and inner ear. Your lungs are fragile and can not sustain a sudden 1 atm ( 14.69PSI ) drop of pressure. For geeks, even more technical details:Cold: vacuum is the best insulator. Remember your thermos and how long it can keep your tea hot?Same here, you will lose heat very slowly only by radiation and a little quicker from the water which will evaporate from your skin surface and soft moist tissue (tongue, nose, lungs)…If you are in sunshine and slowly rotate, you can be quite okay (except very bad UV radiation) (a survival foil/blanket will be a great help).Pressure and Hypoxia. If you expect a rapid/explosive decompression and you think to hold your breath, please don't!Better, take some quick deep breaths to oxygenate as much you can your blood and tissues, then, just before decompression, exhale as deep you can. Why? Because of two things: one, your lung tissues can not sustain unharmed 1 atm(14.69psi) drop, and second, even you can hold your breath, your body will not have the time to transport that blood with oxygen from lungs to the brain. The sudden loss of external pressure over the body will cause huge swelling and a loss of arterial pressure but a rising in veins, also, the capillary veins will be blocked by small bubbles of gas from ebulism so slowing the flow of blood. To make things even worse, in vacuum, the lungs membranes will diffuse oxygen not in, but out of blood, so in seconds you will have practically a stop of the flow of oxygen to the brain. That's why you lose consciousness in vacuum in 8-15 seconds but here on Earth you can hold your breath a minute and have no problem. In space you lose consciousness not because you have not oxygen in your body, but because your body can not transport that oxygen to the brain. And last, no, your blood will not boil, just the water from exposed surfaces (tongue, mucous membranes) and have some ebullism signs.LATER EDIT: Andrew Cox prompted me that I din't really answer the question, after how long can you be successful rescued and revived so here:180,000 to 300,000 milliseconds as the question require miliseconds.Peter HarrisArguments: straight from the horses's mouth: NASA: Bioastronautics Data Book, Second edition, NASA SP-3006:"Some degree of consciousness will probably be retained for 9 to 11 seconds (see chapter 2 under Hypoxia). In rapid sequence thereafter, paralysis will be followed by generalized convulsions and paralysis once again. During this time, water vapor will form rapidly in the soft tissues and somewhat less rapidly in the venous blood. This evolution of water vapor will cause marked swelling of the body to perhaps twice its normal volume unless it is restrained by a pressure suit. Heart rate may rise initially, but will fall rapidly thereafter. Arterial blood pressure will also fall over a period of 30 to 60 seconds, while venous pressure rises due to distention of the venous system by gas and vapor. Venous pressure will meet or exceed arterial pressure within one minute. There will be virtually no effective circulation of blood. After an initial rush of gas from the lungs during decompression, gas and water vapor will continue to flow outward through the airways. This continual evaporation of water will cool the mouth and nose to near-freezing temperatures"About CPR: medical resources mention that in case of heart attack, resuscitation (CPR) must be done within 5-6 minutes after heart stops. The brain can survive for up to five-six minutes after the heart stops but then, without oxygen, the brain start to die. Then, even if successful CPR is done, it's highly probable that you'll suffer more or less permanent damage to the brain. Cardiopulmonary bypass might improve survival and neurological recovery after longer period of exposure, up to 15 min.Same is here even if the heart has not stopped, the blood can't reach the brain. So, in conclusion, is safe to presume that 3-6 minutes are not lethal if you are retrieved in an oxygen rich atmosphere and with proper CPR and/or better, cardiopulmonary bypass, you will survive to tell the story and brag about. :)

Will I get into CSE or IT in Manipal Institute of Technology?

Hi,Congratulations on your score.I don't know exactly what branch you would get but I would share my own experience with you.I got 127 and a rank of 3006.Seniors told me that I'll get everything except EnC and CS.However, when I did go for counselling, mechanical seats were filled up reason being it was the first counselling in 2008.After a lot of discussion with my parents and faculty there I filled the wait-list form. After few days I got a call from Manipal that my wait-list (which was 13) for Aeronautical branch is cleared.I went there and took admission. Then my mechanical wait-list no was 113 which seemed like impossible to get cleared. To my surprised it got cleared the next day.Further,I got upgraded to IT,the wait-list no for which was more than 1000.So I suggest you to attend the counselling and if you are not getting the branch of your choice you can fill the wait-list form
