PDF Editor FAQ

Why did the British get the easiest beaches at Normandy?

Ah, someone attempting to stir the pot by asking such an obtuse question in such a contentious manner.First of all, the British (and Canadians) did not get the easiest beaches. The casualties suffered by the Americans on Omaha beach were due to a number of circumstances. Unexpected currents swept them 1.8 km from where they intended to land and unmapped sandbars caused some of the troops to be disembarked further out than had been planned. The expected single defending German regiment turned out to be an entire division and many of the supporting DD tanks were swamped and never made the beach. The British had developed specialised armour for dealing with beach obstacles and defences. They were offered to the Americans but were refused - bad decision. As an aside, the casualties for D Day were as follows - Omaha 2228, Utah 197, Sword 1123, Juno 961 and Gold 1145 (all figures are estimates as many died from wounds much later). American total 2425, British and Canadian total 3229, nearly half as many again. The British and Canadian troops had the problem of fortified strongpoints, all interlinked with supporting tunnels and trenches plus two small towns that were the scenes of vicious street fighting. They did however have the advantage of closer naval gunfire support due to the ships being able to get nearer the landing sites. Now, do you still believe that the Americans got the ‘hard’ beaches and everyone else got the ‘easy’ ones?
