What would've happened if the Marine Corps had invaded Omaha and Normandy instead of the US Army on D-Day?

You can look at at how the Battle of Saipan was fought as it occurred at about the same time as Normandy. Some major differences are that the Marines would have used LVTs instead of LCVPs. The US Army also always used LVTs in the first waves of their landings in the Pacific. I’ve read several accounts of sandbars at Omaha Beach and you will also see many pictures of soldiers wading through waist deep water to get to shore. LVTs would have helped there. But like an LCVP an LVT is also only lightly armored. The Marines learned in their landing exercises in the 1920s and 30s that keeping the enemy’s head down in the critical time between the end of naval gunfire and troops reaching shelter or the enemy bunkers was very important. So another difference was greater gun support at the beach line. The first assault wave at Saipan contained armored amphibian tractors (LVT[A]s) with their 75mm guns firing rapidly. They were accompanied by light gunboats firing 4.5-inch rockets, 20mm guns, and 40mm guns. The Marines had worked with the Christie Amphibious Tank in the Winter Maneuvers of 1924 at Culebra, Puerto Rico, but decided that there was too much compromise in the design of an amphibious tank for it to be a tank good enough to fight a real tank. They concentrated in special tank lighters to carry normal tanks. There were no DD Shermans in the Pacific. They also began to tailor close air support for landings in 1924. At Saipan, in addition to the LVT[A]s and gunboats, fighters with rockets fired their rockets and strafed Japanese emplacements until the landing troops were quite close to the beach. The three JASCOs (naval gunfire and air support companies) at Omaha Beach had a lot more problems with their radios than I have ever seen in the Pacific JASCOs. So the Marines would have probably had earlier and better follow-on support. So I believe that the Marines with their firepower tailored for amphibious attack would have done better.

Why weren’t US Marines used by the Allies at the Normandy landings?

There were not enough Marines to be used in both theaters so the Marines were in the Pacific. The Navy and Marines had been planning for a Pacific war against Japan since 1913. Because the island hopping strategy required a lot of amphibious landings they made this a specialty, making experimental and exercise landings since about 1924.. Because they required more landings than the Marines alone could be involved in they started working with the Army, teaching them what they had learned and practiced. Before the US entered the war there were two joint amphibious training commands: the Amphibious Corps, Atlantic Fleet (1st Marine Division and 1st Infantry Division) and the Amphibious Corps, Pacific Fleet (2nd Marine Division and 3rd Infantry Division), both commanded by Marine generals. Later they also taught several more Army divisions and the Army adopted their doctrine and methods. The Marines thought that the Army should form amphibious divisions like the Marine divisions but the Army thought of amphibious landings more as a logistics movement than as an assault. The Army set up Assault Training Centers in England and North Africa for training but did not keep abreast of what the Navy, Marines and Army were doing in the Pacific. If the Marines had landed at Normandy they would have done it differently. You can look at at how the Battle of Saipan was fought as it occurred at about the same time as Normandy. Some major differences are that the Marines would have used LVTs instead of LCVPs. LVTs can crawl over coral reefs and sandbars and crawl up on the beach and even get behind any available cover.
