What does 'rm' mean in Linux?

If you are talking about shell commands, "rm" is short for "remove".In the early days of Unix (early 1970's) the developers worked on slow teletype terminals (hence the use of "tty" to refer to a serial port), and every letter typed was slow. So the habit arose to aggressively abbreviate command names (and to not produce extraneous output from those commands) to make things faster to type and output. This lead to "rm" for remove, "ls" for list, "cc" for C compiler, "dd" for carbon copy ("cc" was already taken), "mv" for move, "cd" for change directory, "ed" for edit, "ar" for archive, "sh" for shell, etc.Later on, after the terminal speeds improved, you got longer command names, but still abbreviated. "tar" for tape archive, "sed" for serial edit, "grep" for global regular expression and print, "awk" for the three guys who wrote it, etc.

How is the double decker bus ride in India? What was your first experience in such a bus?

I have enjoyed double decker bus ride both at Bangalore and Hyderabad.During my visit to Bangalore in 1968 I have had the ride both in DD and Trailer Bus. However it was a short stay and I don't remember much.I lived in Hyderabad for a considerable period from 1970 and enjoyed rides in both DD and Trailer Bus. There were two DD bus routes 8A Secunderabad to Charminar and 7 Secunderabad to Koti via Raniganj. The trailer bus was on route 1A running between Secunderabad and Koti via Musheerabad.Every Sunday I used to purchase ‘Travel as you please' tickets costing ₹ 1/- offering any No. of bus trips in any route till midnight. My travel schedule was from 7.00 to 19.00 hrs. I used to travel on all Sundays so much so that the counter clerk used to fill up my particulars and hand over the ticket as soon as he sees me.I used to sit on the top deck in the front with the glass shutters down and enjoyed the cool air and the panoramic view of the city.At one stage RTC introduced even triple decker buses. However my only seat choice has been as above. They withdrew those buses due to rising traffic density, construction of flyovers and lack of financial viability in 1980’s.The nation really misses these wonderful entertainment and educational experience!N.B: Please see the image of Triple Decker Bus. You can see passengers sitting on all three Decks.

What is your favorite warship?

My Favourite Warship is the Fletcher Class Destroyer USS Nicholas(DD-449)Nicholas had a long history in service finally being decommissioned on the 30th of January 1970. She was one of the last Fletchers to be DecommissionedShe was assigned to Desron 21, and earned 16 battle stars as well as a Presidential Unit Citation while in service making her one of the most decorated warships of WW2. She was present at the Japanese Surrender and afterwards continued service with multiple upgrades till her decommissioning. She later served in the Korean War and Vietnam War and earned 14 more battle stars in those wars bringing her total up to 30 which is a number unmatched by any other ship in USN History.I personally just love the Fletcher Class. On top of being pure eye candy, they were the workhorses of the USN during WW2 serving everywhere. Talk about the Aircraft Carriers, the battleships, the submarines all you like, if there was a Naval battle involving the USN, Fletchers were there. Nicholas wasn’t an exception to that rule.Other ships that i have a soft spot for are the IowasThe TakaosThe Clevelandsand of course, the Mighty USS Edsall(DD-219)Edsall ran into a Japanese Task Force involving Heavy Cruisers, Aircraft Carriers and Battleships. Throughout the entire afternoon, the Japanese Task force fired 1335 shells at Edsall and landed only 1 or 2 hits, neither of which caused serious damage. They later called in airplanes from the carriers who only succeeded in immobilising her leaving her dead in the water. It was only then they were able to sink her.
