Anticlimactic but wonderfulI've dreamed of living in the US since my early teens. I was always fascinated by America, and even though I started learning English at the relatively late age of 12, I obsessively worked to be able to speak English with a perfect American accent, and have been largely, though not completely, successful. A few years ago, I bought a large American flag and hung it in my room. Today it still hangs prominently in my apartment.In 2012 I had the opportunity to live in the US for the first time by getting an internship at Quora! Realizing that I could get a job in the US if I wanted to is what prompted me to enter the DV lottery for the first, and it turns out the last, time.On October 7th, 2012, I submitted my application to the green card lottery. I remember filling the online form was quite tedious, but the whole time I was remembering that basic fact: this lottery can, no, will make me finally achieve my dream of spending the rest of my life in the US. I knew my chances of winning were pretty high: about 2%. A 2% chance of achieving one of my greatest dreams... Filling out that online form was easily the most productive 30 minutes of my life.Then there was the wait... From October to May 1st 2013, that was a full 7 months between my application and the lottery results. You'd think I would forget, and in a sense, I did, because I didn't think of it that often. Whenever I thought of it, however, I was absolutely convinced that I would win, because I felt like I so deserved to. I can be delusional like that. I don't know if it's a good thing that my bubble was never burst.On May 1st however, checking my status was the very first thing I did upon waking up. And...Wait... Have I won? What do you mean selection does not guarantee I will receive a visa? Where is all the blinking text? The "CONGRATULATIONS" in rainbow letters? Is all that legalese a way of letting me down easy? But then why does it say I was "selected"?I actually had to Google for the message people who lose get so as to confirm that I had indeed won. Of course it seemed like I had from the text, but it just didn't seem like something that important could be expressed in such a boring way. This reminded me of when I was approved for my very first US visa: I expected balloons and confettis to fall from the ceiling, but all I got was "you're all set, goodbye."And then finally... The wait again.You see, as the letter says, selection does not guarantee a green card. In fact, the department of state selects 125,000 winners for only... 50,000 green cards to distribute.The reason is very simple: more than half of the winners never actually complete their paperwork, sometimes because they turn out not to be eligible, or because they actually cannot afford to go live in the US, or maybe simply because they make a silly mistake along the way.To deal with this, every winner is assigned a waiting list number, mine is 2014EU00029XXX, which is pretty high (in fact, if everyone successfully completed their paperwork I would not get a green card).Every month, the department of state increases the maximum waiting list number needed to actually finalize the paperwork and get a green card. Based on the current trends, my number will be called in May 2014, more than one and a half years since I entered the lottery.Fortunately for me, I recently started working for Quora again. Like all of the several international Quora employees I am getting appropriate legal help with my immigration situation, which is a privilege only a tiny minority of my fellow DV lottery winners have.Because of this, I am very confident I will receive my green card. I am also applying for a work visa as a backup in case something goes wrong. A lot of extra paperwork, but it never hurts to be safe...Update: Ironically my work visa application also involved a lottery... which I lost! Fortunately everything went great with the green card, and I have been living in the US as a permanent resident for almost a year now.Winning the DV lottery is a very complex and confusing experience, but it is also one of the most wonderful things that can happen to a person. A green card generally takes years to obtain and has a tremendous value that isn't measured in dollars, but in freedom.Last time I checked, the chances of winning were of about 1 in 50 with some variations across regions.If you are an immigrant or a potential immigrant, 1 in 50 chance of getting a green card is an opportunity you cannot miss, and you should enter the DV lottery.If you are a company hiring international employees, or if you are an immigration law firm, 1 in 50 of your immigration cases can be dramatically simplified by just telling your employees to enter the lottery.I cannot recommend it enough.
