Your ability with respect to any one particular skill will be a function of several things. “IQ” is a way of measuring ONE of them: general mental ability or “g”. g is assessed by giving people a variety of different tasks assessing different cognitive skills. The score we obtain represents a common underlying factor that influences ability across the whole range of different skills.The concept of g originates from research from a century ago (replicated consistently on innumerable occasions since) involving a complex set of mathematical analyses called factor analysis or principle components analysis. It allows us to deconstruct the variance in a set of variables (eg. test scores) to identify any existing common underlying factor was well as other factors relating to specific variables (or sets of variables). Unless you studied linear algebra or statistical analysis to a relatively high-level at university, that’s probably not going to make a lot of sense to you. Just understand that it’s not a concept that psychologists just magically pulled out of, um, thin air.Nobody with any professional knowledge or understanding of general mental ability or intelligence test has ever claimed that it is the only thing that matters with respect to how somebody performs on any particular task requiring any particular skill or skills. We can also assess “specific abilities“ that can underlie performance with respect to a given skill independently of g. If you want to know about somebody’s mechanical reasoning, you wouldn’t give them an intelligence test. You would give them something like the Bennett Mechanical Test. How somebody performs with respect to one subject will be affected both by G and by the specific ability or abilities related to that subject. Your score on the Bennett would reflect both.So to summarize, let’s say the subject we are talking about is math.If somebody is particularly good at math, but is average in other areas such as language skills, various aspects of memory or executive functioning, the technical term for that person would be “good at math”.Hope this helped.

(If equal, mark C.)The correct answer is C.Although in the real world it is naturally harder to reel the rope with the wheel than to pull it down, mechanical aptitude tests ignore such things. Since the pulley system is equal in both cases, the required force is equal, regardless of the actual “real-world” difficulty of the task.All the wheel does is to convert the pull of the rope from linear (A) to rotational (B). Sounds like a reasonably funny bit if you’re a progressive hoping to confirm your worldview.Fortunately the joke is on conservative (white) rednecks so it’s all good. I doubt it would be nearly as “humorous” if they interviewed Obama fans in Harlem about the mechanics of the ACA.Whether or not the Daily show is trying to comment on the policy itself, it seems certain that much of the humor derived by viewers comes from the implication that this somehow provides meaningful data on the Trump administration. As if this fringe policy is ill-considered because someone from South Carolina can’t justify or explain it.Think about that standard. Grab a mic and put it in front of your opponents least educated supporters. Ask them about a random issue the opponent has taken a stance on. And after some can’t justify or defend the policy edit a string of them together and broadcast it. Now we have a Rorschach test. You can laugh at the policy. You can laugh at the people. You can laugh at the party that houses both of these. You can laugh at “the media” or “the education system” or “America.” Just let confirmation bias carry you away into the thralls of your superiority. You know better. You voted better. You were raised better. Whatever ego boost you need.And of course, we now have “proof” that the policy is rubbish or entirely unsupported, because this one person couldn’t defend it. Why do we elect people again? Isn’t it ostensibly so we can live our lives without being experts on every single policy and idea? Here partisans are turning that idea on its head by implying that the elected politician can’t govern unless all his supporters fully understand the ideas he implements.This can be and is done anywhere against anyone. Sanders supporters got the treatment from conservative outlets several times. It was a regular feature of general election coverage of Trump. You can find uninformed people from both sides of the political spectrum in Europe, Asia, Australia, South Carolina or New York. Just ambush enough random people in the street and you’ll have your ten shining examples to mock.If you want to laugh go ahead. I’m guilty of enjoying such unsophisticated fare from time to time. But if you think it actually means something about a politician, policy, movement, location, or ideology you really need to step back and question how you formed your worldview in the first place.
