Pick the right advisor for your PhD. This is more important than the college or even the major. I’m dead serious. Others answering here agree. Some advisors milk their students for 6 years and never graduate them. You want an advisor who cares about you, gives you a good topic to chew on, funds you, and promotes you to colleagues and employers. Compile a short list of advisors, then INTERVIEW THEM AND THEIR GRAD STUDENTS. Then pick your school. I can’t emphasize this ENOUGH.Second best is to have an employer pay you a salary while you use their equipment to demonstrate your dissertation. When this happens, you are almost 100% guaranteed acceptance of your work, cause it, ahem, WORKS. It’s one super nice aspect of an engineering PhD :). One of my best friends, and my high school sweetheart, were both kicked out of their PhD programs midstream due to NOT ENOUGH FUNDING DURING A RECESSION. Both had to scramble a master’s together and go get a job. Neither ever went back to get that PhD.It goes without saying, but it’s important, Be sure your employer and your advisor / college LIKE EACH OTHER. Many times they hate each other from a past experience.Once you have the above 3 lined up, take the classes you need, forget about vacations — you’ll need that precious week to publish papers based on your class projects, in order to get A’s on delay. Yes, you can extend a class to add a conference paper submission for extra credit; I did this THREE TIMES. Got an A each time because of it.While taking classes, evaluate these professors as potential members of your defense committee — esp. those who you think will be nice to you. Also pick an industrial member for your committee, who can throw softballs during your defense, even if they can only attend remotely. Webex Rules. The controls engineering textbook god Benjamin Kuo once wrote a nice letter approving my friend’s controls thesis. It was passed around during his defense. MIT’s combustion god, Professor Heywood, agreed that my ability to predict bad burns 4 cylinder events into the future was corroborated from his observations of how long it took to burn off residual fuel trapped in seals. All ya gotta do is ask. Your world renowned expert might make you change a few things first, like any other advisor, but they’ll generally do it for free, and their rubber stamp is worth its weight in gold. As a PhD student, you are already in an elite world club. You will easily have their ear, due to the cool stuff you are exploring. Work it, baby!Bring several Subway subs, at least one veggie, already sliced into bite sized pieces, and a dozen or more bottles of Snapple to your defense. Schedule your defense for 11 am. Happy, chewing committee members ask fewer questions, and aren’t as cranky. My advisor lined up several defenses in a row. After I’d taken my stuff away to his office to make the typo changes two committee members had caught, my advisor rushed back in and asked for the rest of my subs and snapples — for his other students — who forgot to bring jack diddle to their defenses!Some defenses have extra chairs for other students to attend as audience members. Ask ahead of time if they can ask questions, and pad your room with KNOWLEDGEABLE best friends. BE SURE THEY READ YOUR DISSERTATION AND AREN’T an EMBARRASSMENT. Having a devoted “posse,” who can comment on how they are leveraging your work for their ongoing work, really can help your case. I’ve even been a guest posse while simply visiting a friend. I even had a good question!As early as you start on your topic RESEARCH WHAT CONFERENCES TO SUBMIT TO, and START SUBMITTING even your survey paper! Numbers of papers submitted to conferences and journals is cute, but ALREADY ACCEPTED IS FAR BETTER. My dissertation was essentially a stringing together of a half dozen published papers and patents, with filler inbetween. The significance of this will NOT BE LOST on your committee. Many universities/departments demand a number of papers and/or journal *acceptances* before they even let you defend!!!Have passion for your topic. If you stall, ASK for help! Ask Quora! The designated hitter (DH) rule, when in use, allows a team to have one player in the line up, who only bats for another player who only plays in the field. In the MLB, other professional leagues and NCAA, the DH can only bat for the pitcher. Most high school federations and youth baseball/softball organizations allow the DH to bat for any position player in the line up.

I worked in a warehouse for a pharmaceutical company in my early 20s. I partied pretty hard back then — there was more than one night where I left the bar/club, went home and took a shower, and then went to work — but I worked as hard as I partied and within a year I was a team lead despite being younger than everyone else working there.I got to be friends with the warehouse manager and the general manager. I was single so the warehouse manager, an old German man, would invite me to Sunday dinner with him and his wife, and I played softball and volleyball with the GM and his friends.A couple of years after starting with the company I began dating a coworker who worked in the office at the warehouse. That relationship went on for a couple of years but she was several years older than me and wanted something serious. I wasn’t ready to get serious so she moved on and I eventually fell in lust with a girl that I met in a bar.It was uncomfortable working around my old girlfriend, especially when I’d overhear her talking with the other women in the office about the guy she was dating so when the new girl suggested that I leave the state with her I jumped at the chance.She had just ended what she said was a bad marriage and wanted to return home to Colorado. I’d been living in Illinois for my entire adult life at that point so Colorado sounded wonderful to me.The warehouse manager refused to accept my resignation. He told me that I had a future with the company and that I was making a huge mistake. The general manager was more understanding but just as adamant that I was not thinking things through. He stated that he’d let me date my coworker even though it was against policy because he thought that I was mature enough to handle it, and that he was regretting that decision.He told me that she was as important to the company in the office as I was to it in the warehouse. He begged me to reconsider but when I told him that my mind was made up he contacted a friend in Denver warehouse and lined up a job for me there.I moved to Denver in 1979 and by 1987 the warehouse I’d worked for in Illinois was out of business. The company had to file for bankruptcy and close down operations in Illinois.The girl I moved to Denver with left me after a year — turns out she just wanted a sucker to help her return home — and I wound up moving to Texas and eventually owning my own business. Things worked out in the end but it was a painful path at times to get there.
