PDF Editor FAQ

Are parents responsible for feeding their babysitter if the sitter is watching their child around dinner time?

I babysat occasionally in high school. I had my first babysitting gig for a family that began at 3:00pm The mother told me to heat up a frozen meal for the child. She did not invite me to help myself from the pantry or to heat one up for myself. After the kid was asleep, I called my mom because I was so hungry and she dropped off a sandwich. When the parents got home around 2am, I had to walk home alone in the dark. I was always mysteriously busy whenever they needed another babysitter…Another time babysitting during dinner, the parents picked up McDonalds and got a meal for me, too. They told me to help myself from the pantry. I loved babysitting for them (it helped that their kids were also super sweet and charming). I was always available to babysit for them. The moral of this story is that while you don't have to feed your babysitter, you probably want your babysitter to be happy and to like you. You also probably need the babysitter more than they need you. By being nice, pleasant, and thinking about their needs while they're in your home, you make it more likely for them to want to help you out in the future. I learned that mistake the hard way when I asked my brother to dog sit for me for a week and I left no food in the fridge. My mom mentioned it to me and I was mortified that I forgot. When a friend dog sat for me next time, I made sure to have a casserole in the fridge and stocked her favorite snacks. Did I have to? No. But finding a dog sitter is hard, and I wanted her to have as pleasant a time as possible so she'd agree to dog sit for me again!

As a parent, what was your “okay, that's the last time they are babysitting for us” moment with your babysitter?

My sister-in-law (husband’s sister) was watching our daughter (toddler). My daughter was abused by her previous daycare provider, requiring a visit to the hospital, so we had to find a new sitter quickly.I wasn't thrilled at my husband’s suggestion to have his sister watch our daughter, but she was family and I knew she wouldn't hurt my daughter so I agreed to it on a trial/temporary basis. My “okay, that's the last time they are babysitting for us” moment came the day I showed up to spend my lunch hour with my daughter. When I got to the door, I found my 2yr old daughter dancing to gangster rap that was so loud the windows were rattling. When I went to pick up my daughter at the end of the day, there was nobody home. I sat in my car, waiting for someone to show up. When my sister-in-law finally drove up, I noticed there were at least 5 children in her car and none of them were wearing seat belts. Not only was my daughter NOT in a car seat, but she was sitting in the front seat, on the lap of an 8yr old child who was also not wearing a seat belt.Needless to say, my sister-in-law never watched my daughter again.

As a babysitter, what was your, “Okay, that's the last time I babysit for this family,” moment you had during a childcare job?

When the parents were running six hours later than they said they’d be.I usually allow wiggle room of about an hour. If they’re like twenty minutes late that’s no huge deal.I’ve even had folks be two hours behind time before. The difference was they had the courtesy to text me and let me know and make sure I could stay. The parents who ran six hours behind not only failed to let me know but were unreachable and came home completely drunk. When I couldn’t reach them, I called the kids' grandmother, who was left as an emergency contact to see what should be done. The kids were asleep and I had nothing else to do, so me staying with them was no big deal, they had internet and all and I was allowed to work on homework on my laptop when they went to sleep.I didn’t get paid that night, but I billed them. This wasn’t out of the ordinary for me, I had a few families who routinely preferred to pay me when I left and some who preferred I bill them with an emailed invoice. After the first hour they were late with no notice my rate went double normal rate, as per my policy that all my families were well aware of.Oh, how they griped. They wanted to just pay me my normal rate for the extra five hours (after my standard one hour wiggle room allowance). My policy is to not babysit for a family when they have unpaid balances that have gone unpaid for x amount of time. If payments are being made then that is another story. That was my general policy but it was truly handled on a case by case basis.A quick threat to drag them to small claims court if they didn’t pay within 90 days straightened them right up. They paid half right away and the other half a week later.I never babysat for them again.(A2A)
