It was a winter night in suburban Washington DC, and we were dispatched for an injured child. I was driving because my colleague was a bad driver in any weather, but especially in snow. We arrived at the house to find mother and child both screaming in the front yard, the child clutching a toy space shuttle to his head. My colleague hustled them into the ambulance and told me that the toy was stuck in the child’s scalp. From the front seat, I asked for details and he pulled rank, telling me “Just drive to the damn hospital!” I radioed to dispatch that we were transporting a child with a space shuttle stuck in his scalp. (Comic relief…after a brief pause, the dispatcher replied “Do you need us to notify NASA?”)Said hospital was less than a mile away from the scene, so we were there in about five minutes. Upon arrival, the mother rushed the kid into the emergency department and they were hustled by a waiting nurse into an exam bay. Moments later, mother and child emerged and ran for the front door of the ED. The nurse followed behind them and gave my colleague and me the stinkeye. Apparently one of the wheels on the toy had been entangled in the patient’s hair, and with a quick snip of her trauma shears, the nurse had solved the problem that my colleague was too panic-stricken to diagnose. Mother and child were gone from the ED before we were.I am still professionally embarrassed about this event some twenty-plus years later.

For starters, pull over and stop, means pull over and STOP!!!!!!! NOT “drive 10 mph slower until I pass.” I have been unable to make a right turn to get into a driveway or onto a road because the stupid driver couldn't be bothered to come to a complete stop.I've also had MANY drivers decide 10mph over the posted limit isn't fast enough and pass me, on the right, while my lights and siren are going. If that's not rude enough, one driver even rolled his window up because I guess my siren was bothering him.To end on a positive note, there have been 2 separate times I was going code 3 (lights and siren) and had a train come to a screeching halt and back up so I could cross.If people would just drive respectfully and follow the law (I know, it will never happen. You can stop laughing) that would fix about 90% or more of the issues we have. Intentional, lazy or simple ignorant. When you see an emergency vehicle respondin code 3, drive like they are headed to you parent/spouse/child's emergency. Same day they might and you can bet Karma will guarantee they get the same response delays you have caused for others. I've seen some really bad things come full circle.

The rape that was a continuous nightly things the darkness fear and this person touching the size of his penis his hand over my mouth .Every time I think I have worked myself not yo remember it some thing tricker me back there the darkness his smell or seeing and hearing about rape sets me off even after all these decades that frightened little girl reliving that pain over and over again..that 7 yr old child emerged every time.
