I worked for a company that didn’t require background checks on new hires. The company hiring policy was “If we put a mirror under your nose and there is steam on the mirror, welcome to the company.”The management thought they had a handle on employee theft in the bar. A few employees were caught trying to water down liquor and helping themselves to food in the cooler. They were promptly fired. Months went by without any discrepancies in food or alcohol. Management was lulled into a false sense of security.Without warning, the cost of goods sold for liquor started to skyrocket. Everyone was under suspicion. Management finally installed security cameras in all areas of the building. They knew it was a matter of time before they’d find the person responsible for their losses.Sure enough, one night a party finished late in the bar. One of the cooks always mopped the floors after everyone clocked out. Management watched the video of that night. They observed the cook pouring himself glasses of whiskey, sitting at the bar, and watching TV.The next day, one of the servers asked me to see if I could find the cook’s mugshot online. Oh boy, did I ever. A little more investigating showed he was released early from prison for good behavior. He had been convicted of second-degree murder.The cook was fired for two reasons. The obvious one - employee theft. My favorite one - lying on his employment application. He checked “no” when asked if he had ever been convicted of a crime.Guess which company started doing background checks on new hires?

That won’t happen.In the US faculty job market, universities hire faculty from the same tier programs and universities. So MIT hires from Harvard, Harvard hires from Princeton, and Princeton hires from MIT, and so on in “tier 1.”Walden, as a for-profit operation, is what I will call a “tier 4” school. So your employment opportunities are basically at other “tier 4” schools, which include for-profit schools and small unranked private colleges.Also keep in mind that the faculty job market in the US is pretty poor, except for a few fields like nursing and computer science. So even that little “tier 4” college down the road can probably hire from tier 2 and tier 3 doctoral programs, and ignore applications from graduates of tier 4 doctoral programs, like Walden.Edited to add a note about my opinion on tiers for doctoral programs:Looking at the US News listing of national universities, I’d call tier 1 those ranked in the first 100, or maybe 150, the true research universities, then tier 2 is the rest of the national universities and perhaps the top 100 of regional universities. The tier 3 universities are the remaining regional universities and liberal colleges that happen to have a doctoral program or two. Tier 4 includes for-profit institutions and online-only programs at tier 3 universities.

Every time I read a response that tells someone from outside Canada to apply to an online job site in order to get a job in Canada, I roll my eyes. Unless you have world-class expertise…and I’m talking recognized, leading expert in your field in which case you probably wouldn’t be asking this question on Quora …it is impossible to get a job in Canada from outside Canada.This is why…In order to hire someone from outside Canada, the employer must obtain a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) that proves there is no one in Canada able to do that job.This regulation gives workers already in Canada priority for available jobs. The government wants Canadians and current Permanent Residents already in the country hired first.The requirements for an LMIA cost the employer at LEAST three months of time ... and advertising costs which will vary.... because the employer has to advertise the position widely in Canada for a month.I've posted national job ads for a previous employer. The cost can easily run into thousands of dollars. If the employer receives suitable applications from Canadians or recent PR holders, the employer has no reason to hire outside the county.Remember that there are 36 million Canadians, that 53% of Canadian workers have university degrees, and that PR holders are also likely to be highly educated and experienced. Therefore, in almost every case, there will be someone in Canada qualified to fill the advertised job.If the employer receives no suitable applicants, before hiring outside Canada, the employer MUST STILL apply for an LMIA from Employment and Social Development Canada.Processing for this takes two months. The fee is $1100 Canadian. Then the employer has to wait for the job applicant’s work permit (temporary) or PR (permanent) to be approved, which will be a MINIMUM of six months and easily take a year or more.So we're talking a delay of at least a year and possibly two years plus before the out-of-county worker can even start work.This is why - for example - if a restaurant needs a cook, they will just hire someone already in Canada and legally able to work in Canada. As noted above, there are plenty of skilled Canadian applicants, those born here and those who have already immigrated to Canada.All of the above explains why it is so difficult for someone from outside Canada to gain a job offer from a Canadian employer. It is so time-consuming and so expensive to hire outside Canada that the majority of Canadian employers won't even look at an out-of-county application.When I was helping with hiring for a previous employer, we just deleted out-of-country applications unread - we already had stacks of applications from experienced people already in Canada so there was no point in even opening the submissions from out-of-county applicants. Many companies have their applicant tracking software set to automatically delete out-of-county applications.In addition to all the regulatory requirements, Canadian employers often don’t have the time or resources to try to verify out-of-country references/qualifications, especially those in an unfamiliar language. Nor are they willing to hire someone they have never met since collaborative teamwork is an important part of Canadian workplaces.Anyone who tells you different - especially if they're asking you for money to find you a job in Canada - is probably trying to scam you to get your money. Canada is also one of the least corrupt countries on the planet so you cannot pay under-the-table for a job offer. There are significant penalties for this type of fraud.If any company asks you to ‘pay’ for any aspect of a job offer - it isn’t a job, it’s a scam. Keep your money and walk away.BTW, if you do not have a valid job offer when applying to immigrate to Canada, you must have enough money available to support yourself in Canada while re-settling. Current amount for a single person is $12,669 CAD.
