It was back in 2013 - I was a senior in high school and had been in a full arm cast for monnnnnnths. I finally got on the list for surgery and had reconstructive surgery in April ( of 2013 ).After the surgery I was in a post surgical cast ( it’s half ace bandage half plaster ) I was laying in the living room when my dad asked me to open the back door. I got up and walked to the back door, opened it, and my dad walked out. Apparently I then fell backwards and smacked the back of my head on the doorknob. It was one of those pointy oval ones - so of course I smacked the point. ( I don’t remember any of this so it is all what I have been told ) I then seemed to seize for 30+ seconds and started to laugh & cry interchangeably. I had a cast change at 7 am the next day so we figured if it was still an issue I would talk to the doctor about it in the morning. I felt fine that night, just had a headache - assumed I might have a mild concussion but nothing too bad so I’ll just go to bed and talk to the doctor tomorrow.The next morning I was woken up by a woman, I was able to put it together that she was my mom, but it took me way too long and it was really difficult to figure it out. Something was wonky, but I was going to the doctor so it was fine. My mom dropped me off at the hospital and I went to check in. The woman asked me my name and birthday and I had no idea what she was talking about. It freaked me out to say the least. I was seen by my doctor and admitted to the hospital right away. Within hours and over the next few days I proceeded to lose all memory. The first 18 years of my memory were completely wiped out. I had no idea who my family was, didn’t recognize any of my friends. I lost the ability to walk correctly and had tons of trouble speaking. I stayed in the hospital with no real answers, eventually being allowed to go home. Obviously I had a TBI, but no real closure on what happened. After tons of physical therapy and rehab I was able to walk, and allowed to go to college. Learning at a kindergarten level at the same time I was enrolled in college courses was a crazy ride. Finally found that art was a prime way to express what I had gone through and talk about the struggles that come with a severe TBI.To this day ( seven years later ) I still have no memory of the first 18 years. I never trigger or can recognize people in old photos, videos, etc. I paint ( full time ~ if I can ~ ) trying to process all that has gone on. All in all, brain injuries are crazy and really hard to deal with - but it’s also incredible to see how the brain can recover from something so horrible.
