PDF Editor FAQ

Why can't a drum brake system be upsized easily enough to equal the stopping power of a disc brake system on a car or truck?

As others have said, drum brakes are totally capable of exerting the same amount of braking force as disc brakes. That is why they are still popular in the Class 8 heavy truck market. The real problem is getting rid of the kinetic energy absorbed in braking. The first electric/ diesel electric trains used big electric grids to disipate the kinetic energy slowing trains coming down hill. I've seen the grids on top of the engines glowing yellow. A lot of energy going up in heat. With energy recovery systems, we have the ability to recover that wasted energy. Having worked with Meritor, I know the brake manufacturers are concerned that the days of stopping vehicles with friction brakes will soon end. A car like a Tesla could possibly have no friction brake. If each wheel was its own engine, that arrangement could easily safely stop the Vehicle.Drum brakes will still probably have a place as parking brakes. Unlike disc brakes, “servo” mechanisms possessed by drums cause the application of the drum brake to further tighten it's grip. Since there is no heat to disipate ( the vehicle is not moving) they are the perfect design for a parking brake. In fact, all cars today with rear disc brakes have a small drum brake set in the wheel hub for a parking brake.Edit: Since some have pointed out that VW, Hyudai and Audi have cheaped out with electronic parking brakes that mechanically grip the rear disc I will amend my answer to”most” vehicles using a small drum brake within the disc hub. Checking AutoZone parts site, the vast majority of applications do use a small drum. My Crown Vic Police Interceptors, Dodge Charger and Hyundai sonata have this design. My neighbors MB 300, Lexus 480, F150, Silverado 1500 all have this design. I hope you nit pickers got a good hard on. Not a one of you could site a part brake down or part number or even a year make or model!

What are your top 5 mobile apps and why?

I fit in the minimalist category. I try to keep apps at a minimum because personally it lowers my productivity if I have too many useless notifications. On my personal iPhone:1. Uber/Lyft (self-evident, you probably want both and maybe a local competitor to avoid surge pricing)2. Venmo (splits bill with friends)3. YouTube (YouTube Red has no ads, offline function for my video learning, my only wish is they add 2x speed someday, but it seems Google has no current intentions to do so.)4. Anki / Wiki Offline (for offline studying & memory retrieval practice)5. Authy (2FA security for all my accounts, better portability than Google Authenticator)My business iPhone:1. Turo / Uber Driver / Lyft Driver (Set your destination on the way to write off taxes and get exclusive discounts to Autozone etc, it makes sense in Houston, but probably not NYC)2. Airbnb / Homeaway (to rent out my Galveston vacation homes on demand)3. Quickbooks / PayPal / Square (For payment processing, invoices, and accounting on the spot)4. Google Maps (has offline maps for download and on-route search to replace Yelp and GasBuddy in one)5. Docusign (contracts signed on the spot)Other apps on the web that didn’t make it to top 5(to avoid distractions, I don’t download the app)1. Facebook / Twitter (for personal connections, sometimes overlaps with professional)2. LinkedIn (for professional connections)3. Amazon / eBay / Aliexpress (buy good stuff, quick and cheap)4. AAA / YourMechanic (huge timesaver when things go wrong, has always been worth it, since I have several cars and you only have to buy one membership)5. Robinhood (stock trading for free)6. Quora / 知乎 + wechat / Clarity (for my consulting business in various areas, and business with Chinese people)7. RocketLawyer (useful if I don’t want to waste time drafting simple contracts, it’s all in one place)Expenses are actually cheaper, since business phone lines are $15/mo and used iPhones hold their value and cost less in terms of time.I keep two phones because it’s a lot easier to just dump the personal one - out of sight, out of mind.I’ll also mention Eric Jang, since I believe this answer might be inspirational to a tiny degree in terms of smartphone productivity.

What is it like to have a PhD and work a low-skill job unrelated to your area of study? Was it by choice or circumstance? What are the trade-offs? How do you cope in that environment?

It is very frustrating. I have a Ph.D. in computer science but I had the misfortune of graduating not long after the "dot-com" bubble burst. Consequently, I have a 10 year gap in my resume with no employment in my field and a 12 year gap without full-time employment in my field. You might reasonably think that it would be easy to find a job with a Ph.D. in computer science but it is almost impossible. For the past dozen years or so, academic positions have been getting anywhere from 150 to 500 applications per position. Because you can't get one of those positions without being rather lucky, so you try for an industry position and find that you can't get one of those either because you are "over qualified."To answer your questions, it is not by choice. No reasonable person would choose to do this. As far as how you cope, the only answer I can give is as best as you can! No I did not rationalize which type of low wage job would fit me, I simply took whatever I could get (RadioShack, Walmart, Autozone).
