PDF Editor FAQ

How long are welders qualifications good for?

Depends on the company and code, but ASME section IX and API 1104 are good up to 6 months after your last NDT, but a lot of companies will still make you test at least annually.

If a welder is qualified on pipeline as per API-1104, can he weld on structural fillets joints?

There are two ways to answer this question. As this welder is qualified on pipeline (presuming that he is qualified in 6G postion with Vertical progression and welding process is MMA), he can make structural fillet joints if he knows the fillet thickness requirements if there is no Code involvement & requirements. If this structral weld joint is controlled by Code / specification such as structutal welding code AWS D1.1, this welder is not qualified to do this structural weld joint because of the following reason. This welder is qualified in a different construction code (API 1104). He needs to be qualified as per AWS D1.1 requirements and guidelines. However there is a clause in AWS D1.1 code says that it can accept welders qualified in different construction codes based on Engineers acceptance. If the Engineer reviews his qualification and essential parameters, there is no point of objection to allow thos welder to make a structural fillet weld joint.Cheers,LR

What tests are recommended for making WPS of a welding process?

In some cases this is a requirement. An example of such a requirement is below - section of 49 C.F.R. 192. Many shops that attain gas pipe projects which fall under this jurisdiction fail to recognize (b). Some states have added verbiage where these records must be on each jobsite as well (where the actual work is being performed such as the shop floor, excavation, city gate).§192.225 Welding procedures.(a) Welding must be performed by a qualified welder in accordance with welding procedures qualified under section 5 of API 1104 (ibr, see §192.7) or section IX of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code “ Welding and Brazing Qualifications” (ibr, see §192.7) to produce welds meeting the requirements of this subpart. The quality of the test welds used to qualify welding procedures shall be determined by destructive testing in accordance with the applicable welding standard(s).(b) Each welding procedure must be recorded in detail, including the results of the qualifying tests. This record must be retained and followed whenever the procedure is used.
