No.The total taxes paid are very high in Europe but what Americans don’t seem to grasp, I will use Germany for example since I live here, is that 40% taxes is not 40% income tax.The taxes I pay for healthcare are 7.5%. And that ends up being less than what I paid in the States, even more so if you ever have to actually use it (I don’t have deductibles. I have gone to the ER, handed my insurance card, and walked out and never had to pay an additional cent)Then you have the income tax which depending on income is around 15% for the average person.Then you have pension which is another 8–10% (Think social security except is in better shape and might actually be able to withdraw, unlike the US SS)1.5% for unemployment insurance- so if you lose your job you get unemployment.And some other small ones for sick insurance (so you aren’t afraid to take sick days), accident insurance (if you get hit by a bus commuting to work), and I am sure I am forgetting something.To focus on just the healthcare- it is worth it. Whoever told you the average total tax burden in Europe is that high is wrong but close to being correct, but they were being deceitful by bringing up healthcare into the conversation. Healthcare in Europe is cheaper.EDIT- WeLl WhAt AbOuT VAT!?- 19% on luxury items (entertainment etc), 7% for food and necessities, 0% for certain things.So for all the math wizards in the comments adding 19% to the total I mentioned here- you can’t live like that (buy no food, no public transport, no books, no sports, no hotels). No one pays that much additionally. Literally no one. VAT is basically sales tax, most countries use it. It exists in the US, even if the percentage is closer to 6% for most states.
