When the war started Meade was one of four RA Officers PA governor Curtain requested to take command of the Pennsylvania Reserves, an over sized division of state volunteers mobilized prior to July 1861 in excess of the states quota.Meade, J Reynolds and Truman Seymour were the original brigade commanders. As assignees to the Vth Corps as of June 1862, Meade cut his teeth in the frustrating battles of that year. By Fredericksburg he commanded the Division, with distinction and at Chancellorsville Meade was Vth Corps commander.Meade seems to have absorbed one hard battle reality in his fighting Lee: when Lee shows himself on the field, don’t hold back; take his charge head on and defeat it. At Chancellorsville, Meade and Reynolds pleaded for a counter attack on Jackson, by their Corps, but Hooker was out of action and the 2d Corps commander, Darius Couch, was under direct orders to retreat.Meade was ordered to take command of the AoP on 28 Jun 63. Longstreet’s 18,000 was met by Meade with 38,000+ men and arty reserves that stalled the Southerners well short of their objectives, and caused the ANV battle line to be nearly doubled in length. Other attacks up the line also failed due to the lack of synergy.3 July was a tragic anti climax for the battle. Lee again could not coordinate his Corps movements in the early morning. Determined by a promise made to Davis to do well, Lee threw his reserves into a maniacal attempt to break the AoP center with forces mostly too attrited to carry the assault.What all this says for Meade, is that the North had a stubborn, aggressive commander who was not afraid to fight.
