When it comes to buying aircraft for civil & personal purpose, its different than buying a car or a bike.To begin with, in case of India,The aircraft has to be Type certified by DGCA or by FAA/ EASA.Operator must get AOP in India.The aircraft has to be registered with proper markings.A “Certificate of Airworthiness” is to be obtained because unlike cars & bikes, an air-crash can potentially damage other’s property & can be fatal to others.The owner of the aircraft need to obtain special flight permits, ONLY when deviation from rules is/are required.The aircraft should have the minimum equipment list based on master minimum equipment list.The owner should have Insurance of the aircraft as well as a third party insurance is a must.Operating cost include Parking fees, landing tax & other associated cost of crew.After all this, the owner should either have license to fly the aircraft (like Ratan Tata who hold’s an active pilot’s license) or should be able to hire pilots (like the Ambanis who are simply rich enough).Hoping someone is brave & persistent enough to clear all these criteria, here is a catalog of 5 aircraft you can buy (in India) for personal use:Cessna 172 SkyhawkThis is an American, four seat, high wing, single engine aircraft that is in production since 1955. It is simply the most widely produced & successful aircraft in the human history with over 44,000 aircraft built so far.You can buy a used Cessna anywhere between Rs 40 – 50 lac in airworthy condition from a Kolkata-based firm named Aerotech Aerospace Services.For a brand new Cessna 172, the retail price is around Rs 2.2 Crore. Importing the aircraft is close to a crore & DGCA permissions is 50 lac on top. The fuel cost for 6 hour flying is Rs 13,000 & you can cruise upto 1,200 km in a full tank of fuel (212 liters).Pipistrel VirusThis is an ultra light, twin seater, high-wing, cantilever monoplane of pod-and-boom configuration & is manufactured by Slovenia. Over 1,000 of these small aircraft are flying over the world for recreational purposes.It’ll cost you 1.2 crore at retail price & is the cheapest aircraft to buy & operate.Piper PA-28 CherokeeThe Piper PA-28 Cherokee is a four seat light aircraft designed specifically for personal use & basic training. Unlike the Cessna, it has low mounted wings. This again is a very successful aircraft with more than 40,000 built so far across its 7 decades of production.Compared to the Cessna, the more powerful versions of the Piper have the advantage of having a reasonable payload and being able to carry four passengers, their luggage and full tanks. The entry is easier, also you do not have to climb on top of the wings for refueling. Also in flight the Piper PA-28 is more comfortable: soundproofing is significantly better, the seats are comfortable and the aircraft is significantly richer in the air.The trade off is this aircraft is at Rs 3.7 Crore costlier than the Cessna 172. Also the operating cost of Piper PA-28 is more at Rs 4,000 per hour (approximate). But the aircraft remains immensely popular in the used leisure aircraft market where you can get such an aircraft in less than a Crore.Diamond DA40The DA40 is built in Austria & Canada & is one of the very few aircraft in this category which is made of composites. It is a comparatively new aircraft when you see the Piper & the Cessna. Its been around since just 2 decades.One things that sets the DA40 apart is it’s safety record. Its overall and fatal accident rates are one-eighth that of the general aviation fleet and include no stall-related accidents. In a 2011 analysis by Aviation Consumer magazine, the DA40 was shown to have had a fatal accident rate of 0.35/1,00,000 hours. With over 6,526 units delivered from 2001- 2017, it is among the worlds most produced aircraft in the 21st century. SR22 accounts for over 30% of the entire piston engine aircraft market.It is the most powerful & modern aircraft in this list & is equipped with airframe parachute system which can lower the entire aircraft to the ground relatively gently in an emergency. It has the longest range up to 2,000 km. But all these bells & whistles come at a cost. It is the costliest aircraft in the list with Rs 5.2 Crore retail price for the base model.Importing any one of these, clearing the import formalities, obtaining DGCA certifications, registrations, certificate of airworthiness, insurance would add Rs 1.5 to 2 Crore on top of the retail price mentioned.Now let’s look at other costs which you need to incur after buying the aircraft. Unlike cars & bikes, aircraft cannot be kept inside our garage or in the backyard. They have to be kept at the airport. Also unlike car accidents, an air-crash is potentially fatal to other people also. Hence a proof of it’s airworthiness is a must. I’ve missed few of the nitty gritties to make the answer concise. A topographic engineer by prewar profession, Meade was a scion of the Meade-Bache families. Except for Meade they had all gone Navy. When the war started Meade was one of four RA Officers PA governor Curtain requested to take command of the Pennsylvania Reserves, an over sized division of state volunteers mobilized prior to July 1861 in excess of the states quota.Meade, J Reynolds and Truman Seymour were the original brigade commanders. As assignees to the Vth Corps as of June 1862, Meade cut his teeth in the frustrating battles of that year. By Fredericksburg he commanded the Division, with distinction and at Chancellorsville Meade was Vth Corps commander.Meade seems to have absorbed one hard battle reality in his fighting Lee: when Lee shows himself on the field, don’t hold back; take his charge head on and defeat it. At Chancellorsville, Meade and Reynolds pleaded for a counter attack on Jackson, by their Corps, but Hooker was out of action and the 2d Corps commander, Darius Couch, was under direct orders to retreat.Meade was ordered to take command of the AoP on 28 Jun 63. Hooker had since accepting command of the AoP in Feb 63 made it known he would not work with Stanton and Halleck. Lincoln let him take the command anyway. The Sec War and General in Chief were Hooker’s enemies and conspired his relief.Meade set the AoP in motion north, to fix Lee’s location. A blunder by Lee/Stuart allowed the AoP to get forces within 5 miles of Gettysburg undetected and a Federal cavalry screen blinded Lee as to the occupation of Gettysburg. On 1 June advanced elements of US I and XI Corps collided with AP Hill and Richard Ewell lead elements in a bloody meeting engagement west and north of the town. The Union forces rallied on the Cemetery Ridge complex. Lees available troops were too depleted to drive the AoP off their second position and the 1 July battle ended awaiting reinforcements.Meade had left his HQ at Tawneytown on 1 July so that communication would get to him asap. News that John Reynolds, commanding the left wing of the army, had been killed early in the fighting prompted him to send Winfield Hancock to the battlefield to take stock of the situation. Meade became anxious as things were developing out of his control and he left for Gettysburg late in the afternoon of the 1st, arriving on the field by midnight.Meade in fact, did not like his position. He found it useless for counterattack as the operating field was divided by the town. Nothing he could do about it. His right wing corps would not reach town until mid day 2 July, so he was tied in place.Fortunately, Lee’s position was equally unprepared. The battle had ended in the evening dusk of the 1st, and most of the army had stopped where they lay. Also,Lee did not know the ground so recce was essential before conops could be determined.Finally, at mid afternoon 2 July, Longstreet was moved to the right of the line to attempt a flank attack to herd the federals into the line of follow on attacks as the whole ANV moved forward. It would not go as desired by Lee. 3rd Union Corps, commanded by Daniel Sickles, had risked advancing to the Emmitsburg Pike and occupied the final assembly area of Longstreet. Meade road out to Sickles HQ and perceiving the point of attack was there, he immediately called out all of V Corps, a Division of II Corps and a division of XII corps. Longstreet’s 18,000 was met by Meade with 38,000+ men and arty reserves that stalled the Southerners well short of their objectives, and caused the ANV battle line to be nearly doubled in length. Other attacks up the line also failed due to the lack of synergy.3 July was a tragic anti climax for the battle. Lee again could not coordinate his Corps movements in the early morning. Determined by a promise made to Davis to do well, Lee threw his reserves into a maniacal attempt to break the AoP center with forces mostly too attrited to carry the assault.What all this says for Meade, is that the North had a stubborn, aggressive commander who was not afraid to fight. Meade would frustrate Lincoln for his very cautious pursuit. Washington did not respect the attrition of the battle that had taken away leaders, and the tenuous lines of supply they were fighting on.Having inherited the vexacious principle ops command of the Union. Meade would retain that post to Appomattox. His later victories would be obfuscated by a vengeful news correspondents pool who black balled Meade and gave all credit to Grant.Bottom line: Meade took command of an Army less than three days before a critical battle. After a brutal exchange on day 1, he consolidated his forces and defeated every effort of Lee to drive them off their position. Lee losses were serious enough that he was driven all the way back to the Rappahanock.
