PDF Editor FAQ

Why are there so many types of screw heads (slotted, square, Phillips, Torx, etc.)?

There are many types of drive types of screws because there are so many needs in industry and constant innovation is a driving economic force. The Slotted head screw... The oldest and most common is still around for a number of reasons. First, it is the cheapest to manufacture. Second, it is the nicest looking when looks are important. Third, it has the highest torque values for non-hardened screws when done by hand. Fourthly, the slotted screwdriver is universally available in almost every home in the western world. Lastly and a minor point, it is the only drive style that one can remove paint from easily to do a repair in restoration work.Phillips was designed for manufacturing only. It was never meant to be done by hand. The beauty of this screw was that when it bottomed out the driver would cam out and signal the machine to stop and move to the next screw. The manufacturers liked it so much we got stuck with it being used so widely. This the the prime reason Square drive or Robertson drive has not been widely used. It holds too good to the driver. Even though square drive was patented in 1905 and full 30 years before Phillips. One note about Phillips is that the cross top does weaken the head of the screw because the depth of the recess get to the shank of the fastener.Along with any conversation about Phillips should be the Reed and Prince or recessed drive. This is a cross top drive screw that was meant for hand operation. You will still find it in use in some marine applications like the Criss Craft boats and Coleman furnaces. The other cross top drive is called Pozidriv, this is a European style cross top. You can find in the US on imported items and European style hinges. The Pozidriv screw is like a mixture of the two styles, Phillips and Recessed. When it comes to hardened fasteners like deck screw or sheet metal screws the methods of driving the screw become more based on power, stability and torque. Also, the cost of manufacturing goes up as these problems are dealt with.If we limit the types of drives of screws, our frustration would be in trying to get a screw to work instead of finding the right driver. Not to mention the increase of cost to what ever item were trying to work on.To sum it all up. There are so many ways that we fasten things together and so many needs of strength and convenience that having many options is the best over all for fastening.

Is there any serious alternative to SDL Plc (company) Trados Studio?

Every CAT tool has its strengths and weaknesses. In a nutshell, Studio can process practically all file types, provides practically all functions you might need as a translator and a PM and it is relatively easy to learn. Moreover, Studio and products related to it, i.e. MultiTerm, AuthorAssistant, Passolo and many more, are used by such major players as HP, Microsoft, Catepillar etc. And it is quite expensive. Is there an alternative? Yes and no. Deja VU X3 has quite a lot of amazing functions as well as MemoQ, though its latest release is somewhat unstable.Across gives you nearly all functions a translator might need, plus it is the only tool which can process AutoCAD files (dxf, NOT dwg) 'out of the box'. It is free for freelancers but it is veeeery slow. And, yes, all these tools can process legacy Trados .ttx files.Still, most LSPs use Studio and/or 'old' Trados, so it would be just sensible to know how to work in Studio and choose the tool that best suits your needs and which you are comfortable with.Very often your choice of tool is determined by the company you work for and often you are provided with a temporary licence for the duration of the project. There are also cloud-based solutions which are becoming quite popular such as MateCAT, SmartCAT and Memsource. They are platform independent, but require an Internet connection which might not always be available. You also have to bear in mind that SDL seemed to have chosen the path of releasing a new version of their product which comes not as a complimentary and free update (which it often is), but a separate new version which you have to buy (at a reduced price, though, but that is still quite expensive). And yes, purchasing a Trados licence does not guarantee you translation jobs.
