Salary as in any other place depends upon role, industry, and experience. There are strict guidelines Swiss authorities have on salary for foreign workers. In IT for foreign workers it may be north of 100 k CHF per annum. There are mandatory social security deductions that amount to about 7.5%. Taxes depend upon area of your work, residence, marital status, and family size besides other factors. Taxes may vary between 5%-20% based upon salary. But upto 150 k CHF salary, taxes are still low.You can try to calculate tax in different Kantons.http://www.estv2.admin.ch/e/dienstleistungen/steuerrechner/steuerrechner.htmOther information.http://www.estv.admin.ch/?lang=enWhile you may have good salary post above you still have to factor in health insurance, house rentals, car insurance and maintenance that will form major chunk for expenses. If you have school going kids and you donot want them to be German / French speaking local free schools, plan to have about 20–25 k CHF per kid on fee per annum in international schools.

What are the most important things that a foreign student studying in Zurich should know and be prepared for?

First, the ETH Zurich is considered as the best university all over continental Europe and especially in CS and similar fields, one of the best in the world. Now there are a few things that just came into my mind:Place - Ensure that you get some place to stay in time; it is very hard to find something in the region around Zurich City.Cost - One room with shared kitchen and toilet costs around 500$ +. Everything else is also very expensive. In other words; bring a "Lastwagen*" full of money with you.People - Most people in Zurich are very reserved, compared to people from other countries; it takes a lot of effort and time to befriend Swiss people. Catcalls or randomly starting a conversation with strangers almost never happens and won't be tolerated by most women. Most foreign students that I have met, hang around with other foreign students. On the other hand, people are very helpful. If you have a problem, just say; "Sorry, could you help me with [insert question here]" Most people speak at least two languages more or less fluently, so even only with English, you won't have a problem at all, especially in and around Zurich. Even at McDonalds, Starbucks and other stores around Zurich, most vendors speak and understand a decent English..Language - Ok we already talked about that above, just some more facts: We have FOUR national languages including French, German, Italian and Romansh. Students have the opportunity to hone current language skills or learn something completely new. But, read here about the German fallacy: Hansi Mittermeier's answer to xyz? Make sure you know the differences between: "German", Standard German aka High German, Swiss Standard German, Swiss German aka Swiss German Dialects. (all of those should have a own wikipedia entry in English)* Some German for you: "Lastwagen" = Two nouns: "Last" and "Wagen" which is translated to: load (to carry) and car -> Lastwagen = car with load or just truck. (Truckload)PS: Don't confuse this with a van (like UPS vans) this would be a "Lieferwagen" = Two nouns: "liefer- (short for Lieferung)" and "Wagen" which is translated to: delivery and car -> Lieferwagen short for Lieferungswagen = delivery car or just van.German is cool huh? Here is an official resource: Handbook for International Students - ETH ZürichPS: Sorry for my English I am still half asleep, feel free to improve it and send me a suggestion. Some more information [copy pasted]:3 Top Reasons Why You Should Study in SwitzerlandMajestic mountain ranges, the world’s most famous pocket knives and bastionary banking are just a few of the things that come to mind when thinking about Switzerland. Languae Requirements: Different schools offer different language requirements -- particularly because of the country’s four official languages. Before applying to an institution, check language requirements and course offerings.3. Visas: Visa requirements vary depending on your country of origin. Students from EU/EFTA countries don’t require a visa, while students from outside the region will require a Swiss embassy-bestowed multiple entry long stay visa. Ideally, allow at least three full months for processing. Within 14 days of arrival, students must register their address and identity documents, along with proof of enrollment and sufficient funds, with their local Registration Office.4. Insurance: Health insurance mandatory for all international students, although EU students automatically qualify for basic medical care with a European Health Insurance Card.5. Accomodation: Most higher ed institutions offer on-campus accommodations, although many students rent apartments and private rooms in houses. Contact the housing office of your academic institution for help finding lodging.6. Work Permit: EU/EFTA students are permitted to work for up to 15 hours per week without a work permit. Citizens from non-EU/EFTA countries face tighter restrictions with only a highly qualified few eligible for work permits while others are subject to a 6 month waiting period. After completing a degree, students are allowed to remain in the country for 6 months while on the job hunt; a work visa is granted to successful job applicants. While the cost of living in Switzerland is notoriously high, the benefits of studying and working here are big, including higher salaries, a global setting and an exceptional quality of life making it a safe and healthy environment for residents and visitors alike.by 3 Top Reasons Why You Should Study in Switzerland
