As a Swiss with Norwegian roots I leave it open if being a member of the EU is beneficial for a country. I have some doubts. The Euro was poorly designed (loss of national monetary policy but no flexible, international mobile workforce) and implented even worse (government fraud and breach of convergence criteria by most countries). The EU isn’t just about free trade but added more and more supranational politics in a continent with very diverse political cultures.I guess that a not well prepared dramatic change such as Brexit always hurts. Some people that stop smoking or drinking get worse before things improve. Some people feel lost after leaving prison or a domestic violence home.The Efta members Norway and Switzerland (UK left Efta 1973 to join the EU) were already rich when they chose to stay outside. The Efta members Norway, Island and Liechtenstein joined the European Economic Area EEA in 1994 to benefit from free trade by accepting some EU rules but without joining the EU. Switzerland said no to EEA in 1992, but negotiated more than 100 bilateral sectorial agreements with the EU. Interesting to note the fact that Norway as a EEA member replicates less EU laws than Switzerland. Involved diplomats say Norway has stronger cards for power negotiation due to the longest EU border, NATO membership, fish, cheap electric power, oil and gas.When UK now evaluates to go back to Efta and eventually join the EEA Norway isn’t amused by this in and out. The two countries had a tough diplomatic fight in the late 80ies when acid rain from unfiltered British coal production damaged Norwegian lakes, fish and forests. Wouldn’t a global free trade zone (WTO plus) be a stronger vision? A gobal currency would probably be bullshit and a global union unrealistic.

Yes: you can save your yearly membership on a handful of savvy purchases. When my kids needed diapers, the savings on diapers alone paid for the memberships. It’s not hard to find staple products you use that are priced reasonably, too. The Tax software was cheaper there at tax season than anywhere else I looked. Propane for bbq, the tanks as well… and the pharmacy dispensing fees are also lower than pretty much everyone else. You can't go wrong with the bicycles, and camping tents either. Windshield wiper fluid, tires, car batteries, garden plants… you get the idea. Which does not mean that every product is cheaper than elsewhere, but for many things, you will be ok. It doesn’t take you off the hook from being a responsible and educated shopper. My general rule is that if Costco has it on sale, it’s a hands down deal. If it’s regular price, it’s usually fair value for the money.Their warranty is ridiculously good. You can return pretty much everything. Which also bugs me, as it’s abused. eg I have seen way too many people return large TVs a week after Super Bowl Sunday. That is just wrong. However if you are not unethical, then you can shop with a clear conscience. I went through 4 inflatable Swiss Gear Mattresses… the product was defective as a batch and they didn’t give me a hard time about it. They stopped carrying it, so perhaps the supplier got an earful. I have seen them chase after defective home central vacuums. Some other stores recently I noticed give you a hard time on returns even if it’s clearly not your doing. Costco is ahead of the curve here.Their shipping is fast. I have upgraded to Executive Membership because when I did so, they promised that if the 2% money back didn’t pay off at least the fee of the membership they would refund me the difference. Which in my mind makes the Executive Membership a must have, if that is still the policy.Having said all this, a caveat: You need to practice some self control. Their shopping carts are bigger than some car trunks. Nobody is forcing you to fill them. When you do buy something, chances are if you are a small family (we are a large one), that what you buy will last you months. So don’t go there weekly to fill out the shopping cart :-) Or you can team up with other small families, and divide the stuff you buy.And DO NOT shop there while you’re hungry. LOL. Too many mortals have experienced spending a few hundred dollars while they went in just looking for milk, or eggs. LOL.
