When I was nine years old, there was a Bible Fair Project.Now, I may have not really believed, but I was a star Bible student. I studied most of the Hebrew Bible by that age, and had memorized portions. I was fascinated by it.We had to present a concept from the Bible.Everyone does dinky, boring half-arsed projects, like “Queen Esther” by bringing in a Barbie doll dressed like a queen.I built a model of the Great Altar in the Temple and put together a presentation where I discuss the ancient Passover service.It was clearly the best project.Everyone said so. I put hours into it, I had sources and research to spare. It was historically accurate to the best of my abilities. I wowed the judges.So we wait for the awards. It’s my moment to shine.And I hear my name….for second prize.A boy has won first prize. He did a basket of grapes for the first fruit. Which means his mother bought a basket and he put some grapes into it. Nothing else. Nice concept, spare execution.He gets a new Artscroll Talmud. I’m reminded girls don’t study Talmud.I get second prize. It’s a book on modesty.The gifts are clearly gendered. Only a boy was going to win. I never had a chance.In front of everyone, I accepted the book and then I chucked it in the garbage.Silent but effective protest.
